: Allison tranny shifting oddly
gmccall 06-14-2004, 10:25 AM Several weeks ago I posted a question about my trannsmission being slow to shift to fifth sometimes/ and or hanging in 4th at 55 +- mph until I accelerated to make it shift. One of the symtoms is while driving with Cruise control at 70mph, I tap the brake to release cruise control and the transmission suddenlly will go to some position ??? where the RPMs are at 2500 + -. Tranny stays in 4th , torque convertor not locked, until I force it to shift by accelerating. When I accelerate the tranny will shift into 5th and then lockup. Very annoying. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
I have discovered that the Quad Stealth 215hp power box is "messing" with the shift points under normal driving. For the record I use No. 2 setting on Quad with no. 5 setting on the Attitude.
If I remove Quad, the tranny shifts normal. I guess the Stealth is for racing only like it's advertised.Edited by: gmccall
403turbo 06-15-2004, 09:24 AM How long has this been going on? I have noticed that the Ally takes a while to learn when something major changes. So if you change power levels frequently it may just be trying to catch up with the change.
Your symptoms sound like the tow/haul grade braking feature. Are you using tow mode when playing?
I cruise on regular mode and almost always hit the tow button when I'm gonna hot rod. The ally seems to be able to be more consistent that way.
Also I learned the hard way to check that spin on filter when something seems wrong. Maybe you should replace that little bad boy and see if it helps
gmccall 06-15-2004, 10:06 AM 403Turbo,
I noticed the symtoms a month ago. Does not happen all the time.
It does sound like Tow Haul though I do not have Tow Haul on when my descrided symtoms occur. It could be the tranny trying to relearn, but I have been running this combo for 3 months.
I reinstalled Quad and different (enough to notice) tranny shifting began immediately with normal driving. Flares between shifts more and shifts at higher RPMs sometimes. I can live with it but I would prefer the tranny shift normal when I am not racing. Maybe thats asking to much
I will change the Filter although my Suncoast Kit came with a new filter.
hm...I wonder if the tranny shop moved the magnet to the new filter.
Mike L. 06-15-2004, 10:20 AM Some of the complaints I have heard make me wonder if these shift kits are being installed correctly. You should not be getting any flairs. My installs have not had any problems like this.

gmccall 06-15-2004, 10:39 AM Mike,
The shifting flairs and odd shifting RPM points only come when I have the quad box installed with the Attitude. Remove the Quad Stealth box and the tranny goes back to shifting great with the Attitude power whether normal driving or racing.
The Suncoast Stage II preped tranny had the Hot Juice power controlled very well, before I added stack of Quad Stealth 215 hp box. The Quad does come with an option to erase TAPS ECM shifting memory that I have learned to deal with. At that promp I now tell the box I do not want to change settings in my truck computer. Once the truck learns to handle the power I sure do not want to erase that memory.
It just seems the quad box is messing with the shifts under normal driving conditions. Could this be ? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Any comments welcome.
Mackin 06-15-2004, 12:59 PM You will find it will shift quicker and cleaner when the converter is locked ....
Do not reset tap cells each time as your finding out .... Also everytime you switch power levels you have to give it time to adapt ...When I would go from my Comp Edge to a Stack of the 215 it would flare like a SOB then settle down ...My Transgo kit was installed by Joe Webb himself ...
With my current More Powerfull stack it shifts quick and cleaner then the stack you are running ...

tbone1227 06-15-2004, 01:51 PM Not sure if this relates to this discussion or not but I had the same problems with the new quad box for my LLY - it wasnt as much HP as your program but the symptoms seem about the same - I took it off and its fine now - now im returning the quad box and awaiting my new program http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif. I also have the suncoast stage III, installed by Mike L. so i know it had nothing to do with the tranny
gmccall 06-15-2004, 02:19 PM It helps to know others have similar experiences with their trucks after all the "experimenting".
The little wife has no "sympathy" http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif She drove my truck one day and said I ruined it. ( had to remove Quad and turn Attitude to 0 for her to drive). She said it was fine then. Boring !.........Edited by: gmccall

I didn't know you needed a Quad/Attitude stack for normal driving?
gmccall 06-16-2004, 08:13 AM JRmac,
