I have a 99 polaris scrambler. If i leave it sittin for about a week or two without startin it - it will not start. The only way i can get it started is to spray starter fluid in the carb. then its still a pain in the butt to get started. sometimes it back fires... after i get it runnin it runs fine other then when i turn it off it leaks gas out the bowl on the carb - what could this be? please any one with info please share

thanks alot- in advance:help:

Kind of sounds like it's time for a carb rebuild. Choke and idel circuits a little clogged, but mains working properly and float sticking.

If it's a 400, I would think it needs a top end rebuild and you need to fix the carb. Top ends do not last that long if your jetting is wrong even if it is due to trash being in one of the jets.

If it's a 500, then it's probably just the carb.

The carb problem is more than likely just a little trash not letting the needle seat fully or keeping the float hung. Take it apart, clean with carb cleaner or some kind of solvent, and reassemble. Hopefully it's something simple.

i have a 87 honda four trax, and mine wont start if it sits a while, i found out that "Tapping on the fuel pump" will make it start right up, try that!

It is pretty easy to clean the carbs. The hardest part is getting the carbs off. Once they are off, you just disassemble them and clean them with solvent (they are easy to take apart).

The only thing about them is that they often need to have new parts installed (particularly on two strokes). Usually they need new needles and seats. If you are lucky the needles and seats are gummed up with varnish from sitting... If you aren't lucky, they are worn out and sticking in, which case you will need to replace them.

I'd start by disassembling and inspecting the carbs and go from there.

You should shut off the fuel when the engine still running to drain the bowl.

It sounds like you're flooding it because your float needle is stuck.

Not sure of carb design, but Keihins and Mikunis are very simple to rebuild.

It's a Mikuni. How's this?

Go to the autoparts store and get a couple of spray cans of carb cleaner. Do as the others have said and spray every port, jet, hole, surface, needle, seat and everything for a quick clean out.

Before you pull the idel mixture screw, screw it in all the way and count the turns. Then unscrew it and pull it out. When you go back together with it, screw the idel mixture screw all the way in and count the correct turns back out to where it was. This will help put it back where it should be and makes for a easier adjustment when you start it.

Get part #39 (float needle and seat). But it's normally included in the rebuild kit.

If it runs OK once you get it started, it's probably not the jets. Replace the gaskets, the float needle and seat, and clean everything, and you are good to go.

That is a Constant Velocity Carb. Make sure you check the diaphram (#8) for wear or cracks. I believe that will also come in the kit. The choke is kinda funky on that model. I've never seen one set up that way.

I agree. That is an odd choke setup. Kind of similar to the old Honda dual sport motorcycles, but a bit more complex in design... Wonder where they came up with that?

Time for new needles and seats if you have the float height correctly set...
