Here is Northern California I find diesel for anywhere from 2.14 a gallon to 2.40. The other day i saw #2 dyed diesel for 1.70 a gallon. Whats dyed diesel? Is it the same as home heating fuel. I know you can run the HHF in your truck with no problems from anything but the law.

dyed = red colored diesel fuel with no tax. you find this stuff in boats and off road. The man does not like red diesel in road viechles.
By the way the diesel prices are getting down to 2.05 to 2.09 here in the Bay Area.

Good to see prices going down. I love it when its cheaper than gas. Somtimes theres a man, yes sometimes theres a man. I got my tank tapped in NY one day while working. Anyway what I thought was right. Dyed fuel is the same as HHF. Thanks for the confirmation

Dyed, untaxed diesel is what I use in my farm tractors & combines. My distributor just topped off my tank the other day for $1.389 per gallon. It's pretty tempting to use it in my Dmax, but I've seen "diesel bears" parked at stock yards testing diesel pick-ups pulling stock trailers. Rumor has it that it's a $10,000 fine.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif

They got 5 trucks at the sale barn the other day, for running untaxed fuel. The out come was rather interesting.
2-paid the $2500.00 fine and didn't say a word.
3 went to court. Of the three that went to court 2 contested the states right to inspect the tanks without a warrant, they won. The third simply stated he had always bought taxed fuel and had no idea how the red diesel got in the tank. The judge ruled in his favor, saying again the state needed probable cause to stick the tank.
Seems a locking gas cap might eliminate some problems if you know what I mean.

Better not put one of those spiffy aftermarket filters with a clear bowl on your truck then! One peek at the bowl an there is probable cause.

The law shows up at the sales around here all the time to check. They walk around looking at all the trucks around the fuel door/spout. If they see a red tint in the area, they stick the truck and fine accordingly. I haven't seen very many have to pay though -- "Sorry, your honor. My tanks are right next to each other and sometimes my son/daughter/wife/mexican (take your pickhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif) puts the wrong one in my truck." I have seen all of the above used as excuses and the fine dismissed. Then that person will run the regular stuff for a while and then go back to the red with a little regular mixed in occasionally. I don't run it in the max, but the stroker we keep at the farm gets a little red occasionally. Sometimes it gets run so low, it probably would not make it to town to get fuel.

I saw Diesel#2 at ARCO for $1.85 today in National City and $1.89 at a Thrifty station in North Park.

I just called yesterday for farm diesel, $1.226/gal.
Truck stops sell the red fuel for reefers, since they are 'offroad' units.
If not u have to fill the reefer seperately w/ on road fuel and get credit back for the extra tax paid.

Here in Texas the (legal) stuff just bubbles out of the ground, so it is fairly cheap. Filled up for $1.559 a gallon two days ago.
I have a John Deere tractor and thought I would use some off road stuff. TX makes us apply for a permit (free) to buy off road (dyed) diesel, if you do not buy more than 10,000 gallons per year, so I did. Went to the local distributor for my cheap dyed stuff. When I got there they only have pumps that are designed to deliver the fuel quickly (like 50 gallons per minute), so filling up a few 5 gallon cans was not an option. They did have a regular pump for one type of fuel that did not have the federal tax (think it was dyed green), but did have the state tax. It saved me 26 cents a gallon so I got it for the tractor.
There are 2 taxes on fuel, state and federal. These taxes are for roads and improvements. Tractors and heavy equipment that do not typically use the roads get dyed deisel. The dye means you did not pay the tax. The two taxes probably double the cost of fuel.
Get caught with dyed diesel on the road and you are likely to get in trouble and pay some money. I would think the stupid/I did not know defense might work once, but what happens the second time you get caught? Because the second time you get caught, you are no longer stupid and you did know the difference.
