Just installed my Muffler Elimination Pipe (MPE) from Geno's Garage. Here's what I encountered during and after the instalation.
First I took off all of the rubber gromets that attach the muffler to the frame of the truck. They were pretty hard to get off. Second I loosened the clamps that clamp the two pieces of pipe together to the muffler. I soon found out that the factory put the clamps on way too tight. So... I let the local muffler shop deal with it.
They had to take a air chisel to one section of the muffler just to take off the section of the pipe. After the muffler was removed it was a piece of cake to install the MPE. Just fitted the pipe in the section and installed the 2 clamps. The MPE came with one new clamp with a hanger welded to it already.
Here are the decibal readings before and after;
All readings were taken at idle 750rpm. Dba= Decibal
BEFORE MPE
82 Dba From 5 feet away
75 Dba From 10 feet away
AFTER MPE
85 Dba From 5 feet away
79 Dba From 10 feet away
However... When I gunned the engine to raise rpm's the readings were around 100 Dba. Which is quite loud. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
There was a definate drone sound when driving. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, gears seem more prominate for the most Dba and drone sound. It sounds very authoritive. If you choose your rpm's carefully you can avoid most of the drone sound. I haven't set any car alarms off yet...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif
I would recommend using the MPE if you like a authoritive sounding truck and you like the sound of a loud turbo. The turbo noise is mostly heard from 1700rpm's up. My opinion is if they don't use mufflers on big rigs's why should they use them on personal trucks?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif
