I'll be away from my truck for 30 days. Any special precautions or tips for preparing my vehicle for storage? It will be uncovered and temperatures will hover around 90 degrees.

Thanks

id get some sun screens/blockers for the windows...Im not sure thats what you call them, but you they are reflective and put in the windows tokeep it cool....That way your dash and anything like plastic wont fade, and crack....
As for fuel, too me i dont think id worry bout it...maybe add an additive to it when you get back to it just in case??
Hope it helps...-Adam

Sun shade would be good idea, For the fuel id leave the tank pretty low when you leave, 5 gallons would probly be better than leaving a full tank...25 gallons on your truck right? Then when you get back run some fuel additive. I see that you live in Anchorage, is that where youll be leaving your truck is it really hovering around 90 degrees up there? Never been to Alaska but I wanna get up there someday.

Most important thing is when you get back and start the truck, whatever you do don't drop it in gear right away. Let it idle for a minute and then shut it off and restart. Then you will be fine to go.

The Allison will drain back into the pan and when you start it up a slug of air will go through the system. If you drop it in gear it will throw a code and maybe go into limp mode. Big Al once told us after it has been sitting a while (2 weeks or more) and you first start the truck not to put it into gear. Let it idle a few minutes then shut it down and re-start. This give the air a chance to clear and the re-start lets the computer see that the codes are cleared. Then it's OK to drop it in gear and go. If you drop it in gear on the first start the codes can be "set" and then it's a trip to the dealer unless you have the tool to re-set the codes yourself.

I once went into "Limp mode" like this after starting the truck when it sat for 3-weeks. Had to limp to the dealer to get the thing "fixed" under warranty at least. Been using Big Al's advice and have never set a code or went into limp mode since and truck does sit sometimes a 3-4 weeks. I even had my wife learn this method in case she decided to drive the truck when I was out of town on business.

Otherwise don't worry, be happy!

Question for 3500LLY.

Why is an near empty tank better to leave than
a full tank of diesel??

For the same reason that people fill up at places that turn over a lot of fuel. But we only fill up the diesel in our barrels on the farm about every 3 to 4 weeks so I doubt that 30 days is a big deal but some people on this forum might, some also still feel a need to change their oil every 3000 miles. I just thought i would make that point since i know there are a lot of people on here that will go out of their way to find places that go through a lot. The only difference between your fuel tank and the fuel tank at the pump is that when they fill up the tank at the pump it can stir up all the crap at the bottom of it. I never fill up at a station if I see the fuel truck there.

It is better to fill the tank and add Additives. less chance for condensation to form if it full.

Turfmower....... that would be my choice. Makes more
sense.

Without a doubt.

Might be good to disconnect the batteries as well.

Same as in winter, full tank better!

my preference also...same as the boat. Store full w/stabalizer, or in this case, an additive. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Let an Army dog square you away, mr PJ! I'm at Ft. Rich and I really don't think you need anything past putting up a sunshade and/or buying a cover for it. 30 days is nothing. I've deployed for 4 months plus and didn't have time to do anything... prior 3/75 Ranger. Didn't have issues then, so I don't think you need anything special. At most possibly disconnect your battery so it doesn't drain if you have reason to be worried about it.

Or, PM me and we'll work out a link-up and figure out caretaking.

You train with Tim? down on int'l airport doing BJJ?
