Prodigy.

I love it. Easy to mount, easy to use and can be moved from one vehicle to another in less than 30 seconds.

About $100 on the web, about $150.00 at RV places. As far as I know, there is none better.

I second the Teconsha Prodigy controller. It's plug and play so that an electrical idiot like me can do it. ROB DOES NOT DO ELECTRICITY!

Prodigy and make sure you buy the pigtail for your truck when you get it. It's got both end connectors installed for plug and play.

For the money it's hard to beat the Prodigy or Jordan. Some are starting to look at the BrakeSmart, which sounds good, but at three times the price it would have to fetch the paper and make coffee to be in the running. I'll stick with my Prodigy.

is the Prodigy is it digital?

It's fully electronic, but whether it uses digital or analog circuitry is beyond me. If "digital" is a synonym for "magic" then I think it must be. Although you can preset a certain amount of "lead braking" the amount of current it sends to the trailer's brakes after that is determined entirely by your rig's rate of decceleration. It's always right there, whether gliding to a smooth, gentle stop or hammering it to avoid the clown that just pulled out in front of me, the thing hasn't been wrong, yet.

I run 3 Hayes controllers in our different cars and trucks.

$47 and factory harness.

Soldier the wiring and just plug in.

Sunny,

The Prodigy is an electronic initerial brake controller with a digital readout of the voltage being sent to the trailer brakes. The amount of braking power can be adjusted as well as 3 levels of boost braking to ensure that larger trailers start stopping before the Tow vehicle does. This ensures that the trailer will track with the tow vehicle and not push the tow vehicle around or worse cause a jackknife situation. It's really not needed on larger Tow vehicles.

I usually don't push one product over another but this brake controller lives up to every expectation that has been advertized and more.

BrakeSmart:

I've got over 100k on my BrakeSmart and that is actual towing miles. It is hands down the best I've ever used. No surging, no slamming, it stops with your truck. Has to, uses your trucks brakeing pressure to send the amps to the back, whatever the pressure you put down with your foot, your trailer brakes copy it. I've used most all the brake controllers and without a doubt, (IMO) BrakeSmart is the best I've used. The best thing about it is that you never feel it, you don't even know it is there, that's how smooth it is. Expensive yes, but I make my living towing, but then again, what is a spoiled vacation or just a weekend trip messed up because your controller didn't work as well as another one would. That will make you wonder if maybe you should have spent a little more money on a top quality controller.

I'm a BrakeSmart fan myself. I've used most of the others and like the positive braking with this unit much better. In fact I removed a Prodigy in favor of the BrakeSmart. I will not go back. The price is steep, but you get what you pay for.

Install was a snap! The instructions were almost perfect with lots of actual pictures to help you along.

If you are going to do any amount of towing, especially if you are going any distance over hilly terrain, you want a controller like the BrakeSmart.

Fingers and eb290,

Fairly new to towing here, but I bought the Prodigy. Haven't heard about Brakesmart before this thread. I don't tow that often, but I've been very happy with the Prodigy so far. Is there anything you don't like about it specifically (I realize the Brakesmart is a technically superior product)? I'm just wondering if I should upgrade or if I'm still fine with the Prodigy.

Thanks,
Dennis

You already have the Prodigy and are happy with it, why make a change. If you were looking, I would say to look hard at the BrakeSmart. Yes, I believe it is a better unit but it is also more than twice the price, do you haul enough to justify the cost difference? I haul every day, to me it's worth it. It's very smooth, you don't even know it's there and with over 100,000 miles of actual hauling, I've had no problems at all.

I upgraded from the Voyager to the Prodigy, and highly recommend them. If your 04 has the factory towing package, the harness that (your trailering fuse is taped to) came with your truck will work with the Prodigy, no need to purchase another harness.http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

I'll second eb290. You already made the purchase. It's not worth second guessing.

My hauling, though not 100.000 miles, varies a huge amount. I go everywhere from unloaded to very heavy and too heavy and everything in between. In the twisted, up, down, and tight roads here in the Pittsburgh area I tend to work the brake pedel a good bit. In all cases, the controller and my braking are smooth and controlled. I don't even think about it any more. It responds exactly like the air brakes on my big rigs. Maybe that is why I like it better.

The Prodigy was the best controller I had used up to that point, but the BrakeSmart is just better. I don't think you made a mistake, just think you could have done better.

Anyone here running the Jordan 2020. I was looking at them and wondering how hard they are to install. Do they have a quick connect for the electrical wires? Do you have to drill for the cable install?

Thanks,

Brian

Brian,

I use a Jordan 2020 in my Dodge (took it out of my Chevy to install a Brakesmart). They are a pretty straight forward install. The only drilling is for the two screws to mount the controller. There is a bracket that clamps around the brake pedal arm, no drilling there. You just splice the wires to a standard brake control interface cable assembly. The Jordan is a very good controller (proportional braking determined by pedal position -- mechanical), but the Brakesmart is probably the best controller currently available (proportional braking determined by brake fluid pressure -- not mechanical). For the money, a Jordan is still a great controller -- no complaints from me.
