I recently had the South Bend Clutch single mass flywheel / single disk clutch installed. The setup works great. This is the setup that the truck should have come from the factory with. The clutch does engage different from the factory setup. It engages about 1/2" - 3/4" from the floor and engages almost all the way to the top. It took about 1/2 day to get use to taking off smoothly again.

After 500 miles I reinstalled my VA 0-70-100 tuner. Man it is fun playing with the truck knowing I'm not going to slip my clutch. The only noise I hear now is from the transmission, and only when I lug the engine. Besides that there are no other issues!

I had the dealer I purchased my truck from install the clutch (no spare time to do it myself). They have installed 3 DMF under warranty so I know they are educated in the factory clutch setup. The first clutch kit would not disengage and between Deadeye (who I purchased the kit from) and Peter at SBC, they troubleshoot the issue with the service tech. Finally Peter sent a new kit that worked like a charm. The dealer's service department is great and so is SBC and Dynadroit Diesel's customer service. SBC covered all of my extra expense with the dealer. This could have been a nightmare, but the service from these 3 groups made it as painless as possible. My hat is off to Tedford Chevrolet (Farmersville, TX), Dynadroit Diesel and SBC...thanks everyone for your great support.

I haven't pulled my 5er with the new clutch yet, should get that opportunity next week.

I just completed my first tow with mine (my previous post identified it as a DMF, I got acronym overload, it's really the SMF). About 2400 miles altogether pulling maybe 5000lbs of trailer and gear. Worked flawlessly. It's nice to have the EGT be the limiting factor on the hills instead of the clutch!

I, too, get that growling noise I assume from the tranny when I'm lugging it at slow speeds. Easy enough to avoid.

Clutch engagement is smooth and controllable. Didn't have any issues with the stuff they sent, it worked first time.

Maybe ever so slightly more vibratory type noise than the factory DMF but not enough to matter. Or it may just be me imgagining it.

I just hope it lasts. This is the truck's 3rd clutch (counting the original) and it's only showing 90K miles. I want a clutch that'll go 100K miles. I don't abuse it and I only crank up the power (Edge box) when I need to pass. Most of the time I run around at level 1. Hopefully this one will be the ticket. Otherwise I'm gonna go buy a Dodge.

is there any noise at all with this setup, like in neutral iding, clutch out?

No noise ideling! I too get a bit of rattle when launching, b ut as soon as I put the slightest power to it, it goes away. I also got to pull about 5K LBS over the weekend. I'm haveing trouble getting used to not babying the clutch. I needed to pass going uphill on the interstate and just put the hammer down! Next thing I knew, I was going 75 and passing the slower traffic. Again, this is a great product - thanks Peter! at SBC.

No growling at idle, at least none that I can hear. The only time I get a rattle is when I lug the engine. As stated earlier, as soon as you apply a little throttle, the noise goes away.

I will tow my 5er this weekend (11.5k pounds). I will be curious when backing if I get any clutch chatter. I'll let y'all know next week.

Hey Greg,

Good to hear from you! I was thinking about you the other day! How are things going for you?

At one of the GTG's you shamed me because i was running a stock truck. This is all your fault!!! :) All I can say is THANK YOU!!!!

you are welcome sir ......

and... I was just trying to "shame you" to take advantage of the cheap horspower to be had. Problem is, to use big horsepower, one has to spend big money on a tranny build or clutch in your case.

bet your still smiling from when the power kicked in :p:

You got that right!!! :) The factory clutch did ok until coming back from the Ozarks last year pulling the 5er. About 100 miles from home and the clutch started slipping. Turned the VA off and also the cruise. It got to the point the clutch would slip with the VA on 70 and the truck running solo. I eventually pulled the VA off and waited until the clutch was available. Now...wooo hooo! I love the extra power!!!
