weis7594 09-13-2006, 09:09 AM Hi all, glad to be apart of the diesel place family. I am a diehard Chevy man but have been waivering lately due to the quality being put out by the General. Could you folks lend an un-biased opinion of the '05 and up 3/4 ton d/a combo? This would be my first diesel purchase but I need to pull a 10,000 lb camper while loaded with a couple of atv's across the bedrails. We camp a lot and much of it is done in more remote locations so I need a vehicle up to the task. Thanks for the help.

GHOSTRYDER71 09-13-2006, 09:58 AM Don't be scared just buy one.It will speak for it self,I pull a 12000lb boat. Never had any issues with my 2005 crew cab dmax.
dieselp 09-13-2006, 10:02 AM It will be the best truck you ever had!!!
MGlickLBZ 09-13-2006, 10:43 AM They are beautiful trucks with awesome engines. You will not disappointed.
ratlover 09-13-2006, 11:47 AM LBZ allison is a great combo IMO. Go take a test drive though....dont take our word on it :D The 05 and the 06's are totaly different animals though........05 is a 5 speed allison, 06 is a 6 speed. )6's motor is better too IMO...
McRat 09-13-2006, 11:55 AM Hate to say it, but the 06+ Duramax is probably the best truck General Motors has ever made. Arguably the best pickup truck ever made.
Why am I sad? Cuz that fact forced me to buy one!!!
:D
STPETEBLUE 09-13-2006, 08:30 PM Could you folks lend an un-biased opinion of the '05 and up 3/4 ton d/a combo? Sorry, I can't.
Oh, BTW,
:welcome: from Florida.
Good to have you in the brother (and sister)hood. When you get your rig, go to "User CP", create a signature and list your truck options and any modifications so users can help you better. Also, post pics of your rig in your "Garage" because....

bshrove 09-13-2006, 08:34 PM I have ownwd them all and this is the best one yet. if you pulled the same weight with a gas truck a diesel will make you smile every time you drive it
01Duramax6spd 09-13-2006, 09:01 PM It's hard to say it's unbiased around here :D . I'm not happy with what GM's doing right now either but I'd buy another D-Max without hesitation {used of course,so I could get a 6spd manuel} Dodge and Furd seem to have crappy seats.{hard and uncomfortable}.
weis7594 09-15-2006, 08:35 AM Could you all enlighten me as to the types and frequency of breakdowns/issues experienced? The drivetrain seems highly reliable but what about the other factors such as computer modules, interior problems, or any off the wall surprises?
dieselp 09-15-2006, 08:44 AM i only have 5,000 miles on mine an 06 cc 3LT but my buddie has 60,000 on his 06 cc dully 3500 2LT and has had not one prob and it only gets driven with a tralier hualing cattel and horses. great trucks.
MGlickLBZ 09-15-2006, 11:44 AM The only major problem I have had is due to the glow plug issue and GM replaced the engine and got an extended warranty out of it. The only other issues are a squeaky seat (I'm a fatty) and the steering shaft. No other problems. The tires kinda suck.
gardnerteam 09-15-2006, 01:11 PM First, read my signature to see how many new diesels I have owned since 1982 (GM first diesel pickup). I am NOT partial to GM - I even put a Cummins in one of my GMs. I've owned 3 D/A's, a 02 LB7, an 05 LLY, and now a 06 LBZ (early Oct 05 LBZ) with 23,000 on it. All D/A's have given me excellent service in extreme use without letting me down. The LB7 lost injectors at 16 months with 65,000 miles on it near Guadalajara Mexico while truck was loaded with stone. Drove it home 3,000 plus miles with crankcase of diesel instead of oil. No problem, and no loss of compression when checked. It is still going for someone else with no problem. My LLY towed up to 33,010 GCVW and never overheated (including up the Grapevine in CA). The 06 LBZ with 6 speed Allison is much refined in engine, transmission, and chassis. Second best truck I have ever owned. Best was a 78 Ford Supercab 4X4 with a 460 Industrial motor put in it when it arrived from the factory. I rolled that one 800' down a canyon above the Colorado River below Las Vegas. The 06 LBZ truck is so good I'm gonna keep it for a while which is highly unusual for me. You will not be sorry with an LBZ.
jodavis 09-15-2006, 02:50 PM The only problem I have had (~10000 mi in 1 month) is a turbo vane position sensor. Dealer pulled one off of one of his brand new trucks had me in and out in 30 min. Would not hesitate to buy it again.
arexrode 09-16-2006, 09:22 PM I know you said 05 and up, but. I have a 02 3/4 ton with D/A that just turned 100k the only thing i have done is changed oil and added diesel fuel.
I am a contractor the truck is not a play toy it has done a lot of pulling. I added a 'edge juice' tuner at around 40k the only problem i have had is when i pull mountains. The warning on the module will go of saying the engine temprature is 210 the gauge on the truck reads around 180 there are no signs of the truck running hot so i havent worried about it i have also been told that the edge gauge is probaly wrong and can changed. I want to upgrade the exhaust system soon also.
I have owned Ford diesel, and own a Ford gas truck now there is no comparison. I hear nothing but good about GM D/A. And have heard of a lot of problems from Ford owners.
My wife has a BMW 528i and she dosent like to admit but that big old diesel will leave her in the dust (i mean smoke) Although the truck is a work truck we take it on vacation every year. I have to say this has been the best truck I have ever owned.

If your a diehard Chevy man, why question it??
My 03 could pull that shiit no prob. Only drawback nowadays with a diesel, is that it cost's more than fricken gas (not to mention it's a by-product of refining gasoline). But for balls2thewall towing and torque, not to mention MPG, you can't go wrong with the D/A.
Not to mention reliability and warranty...... But if your worried, save some bucks and go with a gasser, and then come talk to us about your mileage, torque and overall dissatisfaction.....
bluebyou2500HD 09-17-2006, 07:56 AM YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY! i think im in love! just clicked 1K on my 07 Classic LBZ this is me from the time it had 1 mile on it :D :D :D cant beat the power w/ a stick and the comfort is second to none!
davecharles 09-17-2006, 09:24 AM I'm sure not sorry I bought one. I purchased my 2500hd LB7 in 2001 and have put 83000 miles on it since new. The only issue I've ever had with it is when I bought fuel that had a lot of water in it. Did not run well on water. After some additive and a fuel filter change it still runs like new. I like it so well I'm preparing to buy a new one as soon as I can order the new GMT 900 body style. Then mine will be up for sale.

MidwestCustoms 09-17-2006, 01:56 PM Mine is an 02 but it's the best truck I have ever owned, the newer ones just keep getting better(not including 07 and newer with new emission crap). I have had no issues with my truck so far at 85K. I am the second owner, bought it at 79K. The first owner put those miles on pulling a gooseneck with a skidsteer on it. The truck has been used and abused and has no problems. I lied, there is a light bulb burned out in my stereo. Check out these links for some towing comparisons between different makes of trucks.
