: Give me your opinions!!
Zorganov 06-11-2004, 08:48 PM I'm putting stacks up on my truck, but it seems that no-one wants to sell me a partial system to help me out. So I devised a system of my own that will work, I just want to know what the rest of you think about it. I'm going to cut off the stock exhaust right after the first 90* after the turbo flange and go straight back with 4" till I get to the beginning of the box and then 90* up and split in the box then to the corners into my 5" stacks. Now the only question I have is how much flow will I loose by leaving that first 90* in 3.5" rather than going with 4" flange?
I know this won't be the cleanest install all you are used to, but definately cheaper than driving 500miles just to find someone who will bend 4" for me. (I live in a small town and don't have many of the luxuries most of you got).
Opinions on the modified flange are all welcome so bring 'em on, good, bad, I don't care, just gimme some feedback!!
Cheers!!!
SteveNorCal 06-12-2004, 03:15 AM Cool......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif We'll need to see some pic's
Zorganov 07-07-2004, 11:04 PM OK, got pics, but blasted IT guy at work got me locked out of uploading pics to forum. Stay tuned!!
Oh by the way, for those of you who run straight piped, how loud is it in the cab? because I sure noticed a difference in my exhaust now that it comes up right behind the cab.

Blue Max 07-08-2004, 01:45 PM If you make a squared off "T" to the two stacks this is a terrible flow divider. You may even see an increase in EGT. The best way to divide one pipe into two is by splitting the back off two 90 degree elbows and welding them together back to back so you get two gentle sweeps. I am sure you will get a rumble in the cab. Have Funhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
WYO_DMAX 07-08-2004, 02:25 PM I straight piped mine, noticied very little difference in the cab.
gearhead 07-08-2004, 02:47 PM if you go to a big truck dealer they have a 5" "Y" pipe. I work on a 2000 IH 9400 with twin stacks and it has one under the sleeper
Zorganov 07-08-2004, 05:43 PM OK, so I just ran out and got the rest of my pics, here ya go.
I took the entire stock system out except the very first 90* elbow and cut it off like so....

This is the 90* I used at the back of the system to go up into the box, and attached is the "Y" pipe I was talking about. It's and actual splitter, not just a straight edged "T". This one is 4". They wanted an extra $60USD for the 5".

Next I cut the hole in the box where the "Y" pipe will come through. Now I know some of you are saying thats a really ugly hole and I know it, but the guy at the muffler shop had very limitted tools. I'll be making this better eventually.

Now this was the part that worries me. I took a 3.5" to 4" reducer and welded it on to the stock 90* off the flange. Do you guys think I'll still get adequate flow through this or am I still going to have the same amount of restriction as I did stock?

Off the reducer I went straight back. There are no bends in this pipe all the way back to the rear 90*. I was quite impressed that it fit so well. I'm fairly close to the drive shaft and the also one brace that connects the frame rails, but there is enough clearance.

Here's another shot, just from the back.

And another shot of the straight pipe.

This is the "Y" pipe and 90* I used to get me to the corners of the box. Once there I used a 4" to 5" reducer so my stacks would actually fit the system. I used a set of extended 4" U bolt style exhaust clamps to mount the whole works to the bed of the truck. The pipes sit about 1.5" off the bed surface.

SteveNorCal 07-08-2004, 06:51 PM Excellent!!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gifHow does it sound? Do you like it? Of course you do.
Zorganov 07-08-2004, 08:33 PM The sound is pretty cool!! At about 2000RPM she gets a little loud and then at about 2500RPM she really barks. I usually shift before it gets too loud though. It's really low rumble and real throaty, I love it!!! It's on the verge of being too loud for me though. That just means I have to stay off the go pedal a little more than I used to. I'm not waking any neighbors though, and on the highway she just rumbles, it doesn't drone like I thought it might. I think the straight pipe is to stay!
HOOKEM 07-09-2004, 12:10 AM Looks like a quality job. My pessimist side says that it would look better with the stacks only slightly higher than the cab though. But overall it looks pretty descent.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif
Zorganov 07-09-2004, 12:20 AM Thanks HOOKEM, I tried with the stacks lower at first, but general concensus was to put them higher. At first I agreed with you, but with the lights on top, I like them higher better. The opinion is valued none the less thank you!
DMAX POWER007 07-09-2004, 12:36 AM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif Looks cool!
