: Lets hear from those w/ Quad LLY Tune
tbone1227 06-11-2004, 03:56 PM Just hoping to get some feedback from others who have the quad box on there LLY and give some of my feedback as well. Ive been running the box for past 3 weeks and have tranny upgrade as well - Suncoast Stage III... My experience hasnt been that great with this unit, it makes good HP, no doubt about it but it is not that smooth as I oginally thought ( probably because i was always running the first level only +60 prior to Tranny upgrade ). After driving around now for a while on all settings, and then completely disconnecting the unit and driving it stock to see any differences - heres my thoughts and concerns:
Horse Power is really good, it does make it !! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif , im just not sure at what expense though - the timing perhaps ? It is louder, surges a bit and gets herky jerky like feeling, defueling is really bad as well as the turbo lag in the higher settings - if you catch it right great but if not you defuel and almost seems like no turbo. It just doesnt feel right not super smooth and feels like its off in some areas that could be a lot better with a smoother transition. The other thing i noticed is that when starting out from idle it was rough, like you had to gas it to get going which i thought was strange - when i took it off, that went away. I do have to say that the first setting is by far the best as it works very well and alot of the other problems are not as noticeable.
I guess the bottom line is that I was a little disapointed and thought it could be better - but i dont think its completely terrible, and maybe its just my truck and box ?? Who knows, just though id share my personal experience and find out from others as wellEdited by: tbone1227
tbone1227 06-12-2004, 03:55 AM Wow !!! No one has the quad box on LLY ? It seemed to me that a handful of people were running it ? Not sure what this means if anything, ill stay tuned...
andyg68 06-13-2004, 05:38 PM I have the Quad installed in my new LLY-four wheel drive single axle. Fuel mileage is a big plus. It is 2 MPG better than stock. I have no complaints about the power output. I am not at all happy with the EG temps. They will go to 1400+, pre turbo pyrometer reading, with no load on the 90 HP setting. I have not even tried the 120 HP setting. With a 6500 pound load on the 60 HP tow-setting EGT's went over 1300 degrees on even a modest grade. One could lay blame on the exhaust but I have a true 4 inch from the turbo back. While the CAT is in place it is cut off on the ends and re welded so we obtain a full 4 inches straight through. The 4 inch exhausts that you see advertised are restricted to 3 1/2 inches pre and post CAT in order to make the proper connection to the cat.
Shifting is tolerable but neither as smooth nor crisp as I would like it to be. I might add that I am in Denver, Colorado, starting elevation is 5400 feet. I am not certain this was ever beta tested at this altitude. This is my second Duramax. I could previously pull any mountain pass with a 10,000 pound loaded and not overrun the recommended EGT's with a competitors program on my LB Duramax. For me these EGT's on the LLY are not acceptable for my application.

Diesel Tech 06-13-2004, 06:21 PM Just a little information that I received from Garrett on the VNT used on the LLY application. Max recommended running temperature is 1320 deg. ,1400 deg. will cause the vanes within the turbocharger to seize. So if your taking readings pre turbo these are the numbers for you to follow.
McRat 06-13-2004, 07:50 PM I ran up a >6% grade empty with the TTS Tow Tune (65rwhp) stacked with another Tow Module on Thurs, and I hit 1250 by the time I shut down at 100mph. I'm was running no cat with stock exhaust though.
koopdaddy 06-13-2004, 10:44 PM I just sent my QUAD LLY box back for a refund. I feel that there is still alot of R&D to be done, and I am not going to be the one to do it. I will say that level 1 did drive great, but 2 and 3 were not tolerable in Phoenix, AZ. Remember we are at ~1500 foot elevation. I would buy a QUAD product again, however I feel that it may have been released too soon.
A note, with the new Edge LLY beta box, climbing a >6% grade, Phoenix to Prescott, I hit 2230 degrees (OUCH), with backdown set at 1350 and under the records it showed 100% backdown. This was on the #4 setting. I have a feeling the turbo might not be with us for long!! I can also hit 1320 on this climb with the box at 0 or stock. Readings were taken through the Edge Attitude monitor at the exhaust manifold. This was UNLOADED
Diesel Power 06-13-2004, 11:16 PM what? 2230??? you sure about that???
2230°F is unimaginable. All you would have when you got it pulled over is a big pile of goo under the hood. Again this is in the exhaust manifold what are the internal firing temperatures going to be? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Nuke.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif
koopdaddy 06-14-2004, 12:36 AM I know, it sounds absolutely IMPOSSIBLE, but that is what the attitude monitor was showing in the records display. I could not watch it all the time, as I was pulling the hill around 90. I did glance at is several times and saw 1500-1600, but this was not even at full throttle. I am thinking that the gauges are incorrect?? It also shows boost to be at 30.8lbs, in fifth. Any idea how accurate that may be? All I can report is what I saw, in fact I can even take a dig pic and send it that shows this in the records screen. Air temp was ~105
easymon4u 06-14-2004, 12:47 AM "IMPOSSIBLE" Thats what I say, I have been up and down I-17 through that 6% grade pass quite a bit, and I have never seen EGT's over 1050 in level 5 passing who ever would let me by all them 18 wheelers that are slowed to 45- in the right lane. Are you sure you are looking at the right #s? Mostly I see 750 - 850. Just my .2 worth. Edited by: easymon4u
koopdaddy 06-14-2004, 12:01 PM Yes, it was the right gauge, I think it has to be incorrect, I will call edge today
Dmax Tim 06-14-2004, 12:50 PM Don't forget beta LLY vs production LB7.
