: Will a large exhaust tip change sound?
NCBrian81 09-10-2006, 10:46 PM I have a 4" straight exhaust from the cat back. Curently I don't have a tip on the exhaust. Will a large 4" in / 6" out /18" long exhaust tip make the sound change? What I'm really looking for is the deep diesel exhaust tone.
driveboosted 09-10-2006, 11:17 PM i would say no, ur best bet is to get a frt. cat delet pipe will really turn sound up

How much power loss is the front cat responsible for?
Not to hijack the thread, but I just picked-up my new LBZ, and I'm looking to get maximium power at minimum sound levels. I'm trying to decide whether or not to go with the cat, duals/single, and which muffler.
I like the looks of dual exhausts and I've been interested in the the MBRP cool duals with power tubes, but I'm trying to keep the wife happy with lower sound levels. Can you have both?

driveboosted 09-11-2006, 12:44 AM if u were to do one or the other atleast at this moment. i would start with the front pipe/delete. over the cat-back, +its much cheaper. this is just my own .o2cents, but really only fully benifit with the whole system.
ive heard the Dmax with the whole system & different ones & really i wouldnt say they are loud. if anything its mostly-to all turbo noise(which can get loud) especially with tuners & intakes.
hopefully others(first handers) will chim in a maybe give mor indepth perception on DDing the truck everyday.

The single wall tips (the larger ones make more volume) create a mega phone effect on a 4 inch system. Nothing loud just enhanced etc.

The cat back will get you more performance and EGT drop than just a cat delete pipe will. Plus if you want it quiet as stock (almost) then the cat back is the way to go. On the LBZ's even a system with the cat pipe installed is fairly quiet though! Start with the cat back and see if she's OK with it, then add the bolt in cat pipe and see if she even notices the difference. I have had a lot of customers do it this way and the wife never noticed the change!!
If you have exhaust/intake questions let us know, we'll be glad to help!

NCBrian81 09-11-2006, 09:44 PM If I purchase the cat delete pipe will it bolt up in the same factory location to my cat back exhaust? Is it easy to install? I've read on some sites that a "code eliminator" may be necessary to keep the check engine light off. Is this true? My truck is a 2005 LLY and the only mods I have is hypertech set to stage 3 and 4" cat back exhaust with no muffler.
NCBrian81 09-11-2006, 09:46 PM One more thing, is the cat delete easy to put back to stock when bringing the truck to the dealership if maintaince is needed?

Yes you will need a finger stick, it eliminates the EGR codes that are thrown because of the lack of back pressure (for the egr to function correctly) after the exhaust flow is freed up.

I just put my cat back on for some other reasons last week. While its not hard, its not something your going to want to do often. I live in NH and we have an annual inspection that now includes emissions -:t. I don't really want to have to put the cat on and take it off every year. Of course if I had a lift and maybe an extra pair of hands it wouldn't have been as bad...
Mark Craig 09-12-2006, 10:34 AM NCBrian81,
The guys are right on the stick and blocker plate if you have a truck with a cat etc. The cat pipe is easy to swap but time comsuming to do, best way is to unblot the hanger, then unblot the flange or clamp (depends on which year truck) and then unblot the V band clamp. Reverse to reinstall, the hanger is what gets most folks the most trouble, if you just unbolt it it gets easy. If you have any questions let me know.

NCBrian81 09-13-2006, 09:40 PM this site is going to make me go broke!!! lol.. I just ordered a nice 6" tip and going to get a cat delete. I also want a lift and some 37" tires .. does the addiction for mods ever end?
