1997 Chevy 3500 6.5L turbo - check engine code PO216

Check engine light comes and goes as it pleases, has been into a dealership on different occasions for this problem, each time the light is not on when they have it in the bay, they are telling us that since the light is not on they cannot troubleshoot the problem. This is on a friends truck as he is a full time RV'r (aka lives on the road enjoying this great country). He finally found someone the other day that had a code reader and was able to get the code listed above. We have determined from seaching the net that this is in relation to the injector timing, which under our theory is controlled by the injection pump/computer. What would be our next step in trying to troubleshoot this problem.

I have experience in fully mechanically DB2 injection pumps but this one is a little different from what I have seen on the outside. Any help, points of interest, or theories would be greatly appriciated.

Thank you

Travis.

A '97 will still have warranty on the pump if under 192,000 kms, not sure what that is in miles.

That is the code we are getting, so now what would be the next step in correcting this? Does this mean the injection pump will need to be pulled and replaced, or is there something he can do.

Sadly the truck is out of warranty, as he has logged many miles on the odo. So he is footing the bill and we are looking for pointers on t/s this on a shadetree level.
