I've noticed my 03 seems to stay engaged in 4wd after I hit 2wd. It's almost like I have to drive it a bit before the front disengages, this is especially noticeable when going very slowly in 4, and pushing the 2wd button. (I have the electronic option, push button engagement). You can tell when turning that the front is still engaged because when you turn sharp, it crow hops. Evidentially it will disengage however.
Anyone else notice this? I had a Service 4wd DIC initially when I bought the truck, but the dealer reflashed the computer and I don't see that notice anymore.

what tire size do you have on your truck?

if your rolling diam is more than 1/2inch from rear to front that can cause a problem with disengaging, do you have a noticable tread depth difference compared to the front tires???
i say this because i had a customer who had 245/75's front and 245/70's in the rear and had the same problem he also had a slight problem on engagement

I find that you have to unload it to get it dissengaged. Meaning if you are accelerating, let off for a second and it will dissengage.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking is the engagement motor is not strong enough like the dodge 4x4 unit which immediately disengages the front. I've noticed you may have to drive it a short distance before it fully disengages. Just wanted to see if anyone else noticed this.
Mine does it, if you're in a situation where you can back up twenty feet or so, the front will disengage immediately. If you can't back up, a few gently s-turns going forward usually helps as well.
I don't think it's so much that the transfer case is still engaged as it is the front axle needs to unlock. That was a common glitch with the old automatic hubs GM used to use on the front of 4x4's.

All mine since 89 did not want to immediately unlock when new but they get better the more you use them. You need to shift it in and out of low range a few times before you get in a bad spot where you really need it. It is far worst disengaging than high range. You can also simply shift to neutral for a few seconds. The first few times I had to stop and back up a little like Zeeb suggested to get mine out of low. I exercise it on a regular basis now. Later!
