Which is better propane or NOS and why? Edited by: BassinRVer

Depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Propane is extra fuel and nitrous is extra air. Propane can introduce timing problems.

Nitrous is a great power enhancer for an overfueled system. It too has some risks but they are pretty easy to manage.

If you need more than 500 horse go with the nitrous.

Thanks BMDMAX! What I am looking for is extra power without having to stack modules. I have the comp attitude so I don't want to go get the Stealth or TTS or anyother box to stack with. With the comp attitiude I blow dark smoke so I know I am not burning all the diesel. How long does a bottle of NOS last (I know it depends on use and right foot), how much does it cost to charge a bottle up. Maybe this would be a better question - how many times can you run down a 1/8 or 1/4 track on NOS? Who makes that cheapest NOS systems for our trucks. Quad wants one grand for there NOS which seems toooo high. Edited by: BassinRVer

Nitrous runs $2.00-$4.00 per pound from what I've heard and seen. I have access to it at a significantly cheaper rate because we are a gas supplier (oxy, acet, co2, etc) so it benefits me. We are the only people in town that fill nitrous bottles and we sell a LOT to snowmobilers in the winter.

A 15lb bottle will usually last about 4 good runs... I usually get more than that, but the last runs aren't as good because bottle pressure isn't as consistent.

I haven't seen a nitrous system for less than $1000. If you know what you need and buy the parts seperate on the Internet, you can save some money but the kits are nice as it's all there. I actually have some spare parts that have never been used if you are interested.

Maybe I should get a complete kit to save me the headache. Since you have not seen kits less than $1000 maybe its not a bad price then.

The amount used depends on the level of power being produced and what kind of jet you are using. I budget about a pound per 1/4 run and don't forget line losses, purging, disconnects, etc. Most places run $2.50 to $3.50 a pound for a refill.

I don't know about the cheapest system, I have not seen a kit yet that has everything you need. 1,000 bucks is not all that much for a quality system. Give JK a call, he may be able to help you with what what you want.

my nitrous kit was less than $500, it's just a single stage system but it gets the job done.

if you have black smoke you have extra fuel that nitrous can clean up

for what it's worth you'll never see propane on my truck unless I'm hauling a 20# cylinder to get refilled for the grill

Newbie question here now that the subject is open - what are the benefits / concerns with running NOS and is there anything you need to change within the vehicle / engine for the mod, anything that can break or chance of breaking ? Thanks

MTomac, why wouldn't you run propane?

it's easier to tear up #$%* with propane

I need a rollbar as it is now, more power = too fast

Is there enough fuel in the Edge box in general release for Nox to be very effective ....??

Good topic guys. Keep it going. I am building my stagecoach as we speak, and NOS is in my future as well. Great read.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Mackin, the edge definetly gives the fuel needed to effectively run nitrous!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Unless you can find a IHRA track. We don't have them in the West, but they allow 11.50 before the rollbar rule.

With a Corvette, the rollbar is just clumsy. With a CC truck, it will effectively turn the truck into a 2 seater unless you can get away with L-shaped rear support bars and put a lot of thought into it.

propane vs. nos - this seems to be an unfair comparison. isnt propane long lasting constant power and nitrous oxide very short term, only good in spurts like drag racing?

Propane and Nitrous are two different types of power-enhancers, you can't compare them, but you can "stack" them.

Propane will work best on "underfueled" engines, but nitrous works better on "overfueled" engines.

You could run nitrous with about anything that is being overfueled. So I would say yes on a juice on the 125 or 145 settings. You just have to watch your jetting for how much fuel you are running. Less smoke-you need a smaller jet, smokin like a freight train= a bigger jet (s) depending on if you have a single or dual stage system. I have seen both setups in person=http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif!!!

Has anyone torn up a D/A on propane? I am leaning towards propane because it last longer. I do not want to go fill up a NOS bottle every week.

Hoot ran it.

Hoot sold the truck with a fear of future engine issues.

If you are looking for ways to add more fuel then why not get a bigger program? N2O is air, propane is fuel, they realy are different. It would be easier IMO and cheaper both short term and long term to add the fuel via programing or injectors or the like than with a BBQ gas. Now the debate of getting more air via a bigger turbo or N2O....thats one thats still up in the air for me for a few reasons. Although $ is the reason I dont have to think 2 hard about deciding between the 2.Edited by: ratlover

You're not gonna see the gains with propane like you would see with nos. We can allready get more than enough fuel to the motor without propane, we need more air=bigger turbo or nos. Now if you went with nos and propane thats a different story....... fuel + air=hp.

Yes nos is a paininthe ass to fill all the time and it doesn't last long, but for racing or the likes its the way to go. If your looking for some fuel economy with some mild power added then propane would be fine, but just don't expect dragster gains with propane if no extra air is involved. She smoke like a sum bitch with propane and programming though http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Also remember, Propane was mainly in use before the Juice came out. For quite a while, Propane was the only power adder out there for the Duramax. Then came the pressure boxes, and the problems associated with them.

There is a guy on here that runs propane on his Diesel Suburban only when he tows. He has a line that he runs from the travel trailer cylinders to the truck, and plumbed it up to the engine. All home designed, and quite nice too!

In moderation, propane is OK. I feel that it's just two different fuels with two totally different combustion properties to be used as a major power adder.
