Cabin Air Filter Retrofit Kits now Available

Some History: From 1999 to 2002, GM designed the HVAC system in the GMT-800 trucks (Silverado, Sierra, Avalanche, Tahoe, Yukon, Escalade) to include Cabin Air Filters. Frankly, this was a good idea by GM, since most trucks work in dusty, dirty environments. If you see pictures of used filters from other people's trucks, you come to realize just how much crud and crap can get into your HVAC system without you realizing it.

In 2003, GM decided to delete this particular feature, to the dismay of many people. "Why?", we do not know. The best guess is that it was a cost-saving move. Whatever their reasons, GM redesigned the units to block off the filter slots. We did get lucky, though. GM left the filter boss and mounts intact. This opened up the door for a possible future retrofit.

Since we both have family members that deal with allergies, a fellow DP member (CrazyDaze) and I decided to retrofit the filters into our 2003 Sierras. We had seen that other people had been able to do this, and we both decided this was a good idea. We live relatively close to each other, so one day in August, we got together and modified our truck's HVAC units.
If you have been following the Cabin Air Filter thread, you have seen the results of our work.

What we decided was that we would take a "scientific" approach to this mod, and see if we could make it look like a factory install. Taking pics and documenting our approach was going to be crucial. What we found upon inspection of our trucks was this: the basic design of both our trucks HVACs were the same, but GM had changed the filter area slightly. This is another one of those "Who knows what they were thinking..." kind of things. We decided that this would not deter us, so we marked off where we thought the filter slots should go, and got down to work.

After we both got over that momentary sense of fear of cutting into the HVAC system, we found that cutting the slots for the filters was relatively easy, as long as we went slow and thought about what we were doing. Since there were no "instructions" for this mod, we went by trial and error. The cutting went smoothly, and the filters installed with no major problems. But we did run into one small sticking point after installing the filters:

How do we seal the slots after the filters were installed?

The HVAC system needs to have a good seal to work properly, and neither one of us were too enamored with the idea of using tape to seal the holes. We both figured tape was a temporary solution, and after a few months of use, the tape's adhesive would let go, thereby causing a leak in the system. Upon examination of the filter area, I came upon the idea of a cover and seal using mounting points that GM conveniently left in the system. I would have to make different covers for both our trucks, since as I stated above, GM had made some changes to the mounting area for the filter covers in our two trucks. Subsequently, I have found that the majority of trucks have the design similar to my vehicle, with the other, more involved design similar to Crazydaze's vehicle being in the minority. This was yet another lucky find on our part. In the end, I have come up with a cover/seal assembly that utilizes the factory mount points, and seals the filter area perfectly.

So this brings me to the "kit". After documenting everything we did and our procedures on The Diesel Place, I was asked by quite a few people to help them do this mod by making the covers and writing up the instructions in a "How to...." booklet. Some people ventured that I could even sell the covers. After a lot of convincing, I decided to make up a filter kit with detailed instructions to sell.
I have been granted "Limited Vendor" status by Nick for what I'm calling my "Cabin Air Filter Retrofit Kit".

This "Cabin Air Filter Retrofit Kit" will work on MOST all 2003-up General Motors GMT-800 platform trucks. This includes Silverado, Sierra, Avalanche, Tahoe, Yukon and Suburban.

The kit consists of the following:

2 cabin filters
1 cover/seal assembly and mounting screw
1 detailed instruction booklet with pictures
1 page for owners manual
1 glove box sticker

I have two requirements before you order.

1) You have to lower the passenger side kick panel under the glove box area (do not remove the screw above the tranny hump), and comparing your HVAC unit to the pictures below, check which HVAC design you have. You can then order the appropriate kit. At the current time, I only have the covers ready for designs similar to my HVAC unit (Kit#1). I am currently working on a new cover/seal design for the systems like CrazyDaze's that is less involved than what we originally designed. (Kit#2)

2) You MUST have experience using a Dremel-type cutting tool and cutting wheel. I cannot stress this enough!!!!!! Since this involves YOU cutting into an area of your truck, you MUST assume all responsibility for your skills and approach. Speeding through this install can and will result in the cover not sealing correctly, and possible HVAC damage. Nobody wants that. If you do not have adequate skill with a Dremel, please find someone who does. I cannot be held responsible for your procedures and methods, since I am not the person actually doing the cutting! I have described the procedures in great detail, and I have included detailed pictures of the slot area and resulting cut out.

Please contact me through the Diesel Place email feature to order.

Please ask any questions before ordering.

Payment can be by money order, check or paypal.

* If paying with paypal, add $ for paypal fees. They get a hefty chunk of change it move money.

Kit will be shipped after check has cleared the bank.

I will try to bring some if people want them.

I have 10 cover/seal setups available right now, they are black-painted aluminum. Future units will be black powder-coated steel. I'm just waiting on my metal guy to shear them for me, it's holding me up.....
