Tailgate down warning alarm/light

OK, I can't tell you the number of times I have removed something out of the back of my truck and forgot to go back and close the tailgate. I have a roll-up tonneau cover so I can't see my tailgate when it is down. I have lost a tool box and motorcycle parts this way. I am looking to make or buy a warning light for this. Does anyone know of one? Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it? If so what did you do? I drove off again today with my tailgate down. Fortunately a man pulled beside me and blew his horn and pointed back there. As soon as he did I knew what he meant. I have a bad forgetful side and since I can't fix it I have to idiot proof this for me.

Grab a hood switch or some other pressure activated switch, like would be placed in a door and then just going to have to find a suitable place to mount it in the rear where it will be triggered by the tailgate but not interfere with closing, then wire it to a lamp that is in the cab that comes on with the switch is interrupted (tailgate open).

Yes that is what I am planning to do. I just wanted to get some ideas of where anyone else put a light or anything unusual they did. A warning like the door alarm would be great. Only not feasible to add to the system. Thanks

I wonder if you could wire the momentary switch in series with one of your doors circuits, like the right rear. That way you'd get the dinging and DIC "Door Ajar" message that the door was open, but it would mean your tailgate.

I was acutally thinking about this myself, I also have a roll up tonneau cover and it does make it very difficult to tell whether or not the tailgate is closed properly. I was thinking of mounting a micro switch (you know the type with the little roller on the end of the lever) at the top corner of the bed, so it's out of the way and still easy to adjust when it makes contact with the tailgate, then just mount an LED on the dash somewhere that you will see it. Also remember to wire it into a "Key on" power source.

I almost forgot use a normally open switch if you want the light on when the tailgate is open, and a normally closed switch if you want the light on all the time except when the tailgate is open.

what about just putting a lock on the tailgate so that you have to put your keys in it and before you can have your keys back the tailgate needs to be up and locked.....

I am getting a remote lock that works with the door locks. I used to have a Bully tail gate lock on my 03 and I don't really remember having to leave the keys in the lock. It was either locked or unlocked.

That is a good thought. Maybe both rear doors at the same time since the odds of both rear doors being ajar at the same time are highly unlikely. I will look into that.
