Jump Start Battery Charger ... how many amps?

Looking to buy a new battery charger, want one that will cover all the bases. Seen several that have a "jump start" feature. For an '02 Duramax, how many amps would be appropriate boost [aside from "bigger the better"] ... what can get the job done?

Take a look at any of the "smart" battery chargers from Black and Decker or Vector. Vector makes them for B&D as well as sells them under thier own name. These are computer controlled 3 stage charges and do wonders for charging in comparison to an old fashion tranformer type. They make them a 1 minute start feature.

Jump start battery charger

First question I should ask is what is the HP of the starter motors? Are they about 2.5 HP then 1 hp = 746 watts then W/ V= A which is then 746/ 12 = 62 amps so 2.5 hp = 156 amps. Plus other parasitic losses? I would be temped to go to a farm store and see what they sell for farm tractor jump starters charger??? Hope this helps?

Its all about giving the batteries an initial charge to produce enough cranking amps from the batteries not the so much the charger. In the freezing weather you will have a hell of a time starting a duramax with totally dead batteries and just the charger on boost. Theres a big difference between drained batteries and completely dead batteries.
Its about how long you want to wait for the charger to give an initial charge to the batteries and the combination of the charger and the batteries that will start you truck.
If you have to wait about one minute thats not bad. SO the smaller the boost amps the longer you will have to wait.
