Installing cab lights on a non-cab lights truck

Anyone tried to put cab lights on a truck that didnt come with them. In my head it seems simple... measure the mounting locations off so they are straight, drop the headliner, drill small holes with a step-bit, route the wiring through the headliner and down the a-pillar and tap into a key-on 12V source. It sounds easy enough. My only questions are, do the lights bolt on or stick on? And could i get some late model Powerjoke lights to work? I know it's treason, but i like the 4 in a row look better than the chevy style bar in the middle with little lights flanking them, and if im going to go out of my way to have them, why not be unique.

I just installed cab lights on mine the other week. They bolt on. I had to drill 13 holes in the roof of my truck (cringe) but i did it and i think they look good. I put the Recon smoked led lights on mine. I took the easy way out for the wiring, i bought the wiring harness from GM parts direct for a non GPS equipped truck and just plugged it into the stock location for cab lights, and spliced the ends onto the leads for the lights. (since the plugs were different)

I don't see why you couldn't put the powerjoke lights on it. You could also put the older GM lights on it ( the set of 5) if you wanted to keep it GM.

hey Max, was the $250 for parts & install and were the lights for your model year or the for the nbs? I was thinking about having the dealer do mine so I didn't have to worry about them.

That was for the parts and install..my model year. They are aftermarket lights but look/work exactly the same. I thought about doing mine too but for $250 I didn't have to worry about screwing it up...plus they were already working on the roof patching holes from the visor the previous owner had put on.

joeairforce,

I am getting ready to do the same thing.

stupid question #1 - the factory wires are brown and black, when you wired it to the new lights did you go red to brown and black to black??

stupid question #2 - did you have to change the wires at the green factory connector?? (i seen this on another post)

stupid question #3 - If you used recon lights, did you use the black spacers and square clips, or just drill a hole for the sheetmetal screw??
