Battery group size for 01 Duramax

Found a great deal on Optima batteries at http://www.diversifiedbattery.com/Ex...to_Marine.html

My original batteries are finally dead(07-01 production date--36K miles) and I would like to install the largest batteries (I want the extra juice for those camping trips with my camper) that I can without having to modify the battery trays.. Truck is not near me at this time so I can not pop the hood to check the group size.. Auto part stores around here are no help at all when trying to determine the correct size batteries for the truck...
So please help out a Duramax brother and tell me the stock group size and the max size that I can install without mods to the battery trays.

Thanks,Steve

AC Delco series should be 78 for the stock batteries.

People seem to like Optima's.

I just replaced my 2003 factory AC-Delcos a few days ago. The stock ones were 78s, but 1N have higher CCA and fit just fine (I used some RTV on the top terminal caps to keep them on so nothing shorts them, as the 1Ns I got have both top and side terminals).

Personally I think Optima's are overrated and not nearly as good as they were a few years ago, but that's just my opinion. I got the Walmart MAXX-1N with 3YR free replacement/7YR Prorate.

For what it's worth...

Most campers are set-up to have their own RV battery, automotive batteries are not designed to run RV equipment (deep cycle vs. regular style)

Your better off staying with the same CCA battery the truck was designed for , unless your planning on upgrading the alternator as well.

If you are going to spend money on a 'good' battery dont get an optima. REALLY overrated IMO. They just have a huge name because the ricers swear by them . My best description of them is the BANKS of the battery world.

want an insane battery? Get an Odyssey

Steve, I have an Exide in my '00 Formula and have had good service from it. When my truck approaches three years old, I plan to install the group 78 Exide. If you purchase the batteries, post if you have to do any adjustments to get the cables connected. Since the Exide's always had the posts at the outermost edge of the battery, there shouldn't be a problem like the Optimas before their redesign.
