80w90 in transfercase???

Can a person use 80w90 in there transfercase? if you did run the 80w90 what would happen to your transfercase? I was told that you could and everything would be fine with it.
Thanks

i put it in my sisters truck (01 1500) a couple years ago when i replaced her transfer case. at the time I didnt realize they used atf as spec. to this day it still has gear lube in it and its been prob 75k miles so id say its not the end of the world. But I wouldnt put gear lube in intentionally unless your constantly using 4wd and really running it hard. otherwise its super thick when its cold and the Tcase never gets any heat into unless your in 4wd.

It wont hurt the transfercase very much... Maybe be too thick for the pump to work properly and burn that up but what it will do is hurt the transmission if it gets in there. If for some reason the seal between the transfercase and tranny go out and the fluid starts mixing I don't imagine your trans is going to like you very much. When I think of a broken Allison I see $$$.

why use anything but atf...it makes the tcase last pretty good. 1/2 tons are pretty specific because they dont have a mechanical lock for 4x4 (ones with auto 4x4 button) they have a clutch pack just like an auto trans. ours are just like a regular mechanical tcase but like they said if the front seal goes on the tcase it will throw gear lube. i think thats one reason why the use atf. it works tons of trucks use it with success the way i look at it its not worth messin with and any dex 3 atf is dirt cheap (after all most of our trucks were bought used and survived with atf for how long...) just my 2 cents

transynd in mine. Every truck that I have ever split the t-case and tranny always have fluid between the two I have had 10 different t-cases out of 9 different trucks. 2 from my 03 d-max, 1 from my 07 d-max, 1 from my 98 6.5, 1 from a customers 03 d-max, 1 from a 91 suburban, 1 from a 84 military blazer 6.2, 1 from a 79 chevy k20, 95ish explorer, last one would be from a 84 k20.

The pump most likely will not work correct. And it is not the pump that will burn up it is the bearings that the pump pumps lubricant to that will burn up. Expensive if that were to happen.
