DEF "shelf life"

Sales manager gave me a bottle when we got the truck but only offered it after I asked if they had filled the DEF tank. He said they did not add to the tank other than what was in it when it arrived. Given the discount I got for purchasing the truck, I wasn't going to quibble over a couple bucks. One thing to note...mgr said the head mechanic said the DEF has a lifespan of 3-6 months. ??? I think they got that wrong because the jug says shelf life of 2 years. Good thing because if that were the case, I'd have to either keep a low level or install a drain plug on the DEF tank.

gm says shelf life of 3-6 months, that is what our information says as of now.
On the low def fluid, gm pays for the dealer to fill it, it is ONLY to be done at time of sale to the final customer.

Just filled my tank for the first time today. The bottle said best used before 5/2012. So I figure it has a 2 year self life. It also says to store above 22 degrees.

3-6 months What if you fill the tank then end up only driving 300 miles for the next 6 months?

Can you provide a source that says GM pays the dealer? I'll ask for the remainder if there's proof of that.

Greg
Jug does say 2 yrs on the label. And about that 22 degrees, well, pretty sure here in Canada and northern US states that its common for temps to drop below that. So what happens then? Don't drive?

We had three vehicles, now we just have this one. As it is now, working from home, we're lucky if we put 500 miles on the truck in a month. I guess there's no sense of me filling this DEF tank. So I'm going to have to figure out some measure stick for this tank I guess.

Here in the "PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF MARYLAND" they were taliking about making it a Hazmat product, that would make the cost go up here by 400%.
I hope they don't do that. If they do or raise our taxes anymore, we will just drink the stuff before it's shelf life expires. "Has Ha"
