WVO Sources???

I am having a real hard time finding any sources in my area to acquire WVO. Every place I go is under contract by Griffin Industries for all there WVO. I have tried all the mom and pop places and they are under contract too. Does anyone have any insight as what other options I have to get WVO. I have saw a few places that wholesale WVO that is dewatered and filtered but they want about 1.50-1.90 a gallon for it but, theres nothing close to me that sells it. Nowadays it would be worth it to buy it if thats the only way. But I want it free!! Anybody ever been able to get a source out of contract? Thanks

The situation you describe is quite common these days. Back when I first started in the WVO stuff 5 years ago, almost every restaurant was paying significant money to have the oil hauled away. So they were happy to give me their oil. That situation has since flipped in many parts of the country and now the restaurants are being paid for their oil. Where I live now, even the little hole-in-the-wall diners are locked up in a contract to sell their oil to a rendering company. Even if they wanted to sell it and I wanted to buy it, most can't because of their contract. It makes me wonder how people can justify spending thousands of dollars on biodiesel processors when the supply of free, or even cheap, WVO is certainly not going to be around forever.

I guess my only advice would be to try to find restaurants that are just being built or changing ownership and try to catch them before they sign a contract with a rendering company.

I've even kicked around the idea of talking with a local butcher shop to get beef and pork fat to render myself, but that opens many cans of worms that I'm not certain I have the time or inclination to deal with.

As the Habanero said above its gotten toughter, I started burning VO when Dino was $1.50 a gallon cause I thought that was ridculous it was a lot easier then , I get 100 gals a week and still have from day one with no contracts Talk to the chefs they have the power in the kitchen, You need to think ouside the box afterall you are in a part of the world that is king of the fryed food. Every mini mart frys chicken, costco, sams, pizza places, mexican, business cafiterias, hosipital cafiterias, road side stands, fairs, ete ete thier is more avail than you can believe its like making sales calls if you get turned down 10 times then you have to call on 20 locations. Good luck

I like the thought of "thinking outside the box". I actually change the oil for my restaurants which frees up time for the kitchen staff.

The sad thing is that asking how to get WVO is like asking a Fisherman were are the fish biting. It is getting to a point no one wants to tell.
