Mobil 1 Synthetic vs, Rotella T Synthetic

Guys,

I 'm sure this has been answered/debated before, but I can't find a good answer. Which is a better oil to go with?

I have been running Mobil 1 5-40 TDT for a while and now it is time for an oil change. I have noticed Mobil is harder to find and the price is now $7 a quart.

Rotella T synthetic is much easier to find and it cost $22 a gallon. A modest savings per quart compared to mobil.

so what should i do, go for the easier to find, cheaper oil, or hold out for Mobil?

I want the best oil for the truck and if that means mobil, then i will have to search harder

thanks

I find Mobil 1 TDT at every major auto parts store I walk into. I would not expect to find it a WalMart or such. But both oils are excellent - I run Mobil 1 TDT in the Dmax and Rotella T syn blue bottle in everything else from the lawn mower to the wife's PT Cruiser..

Found Mobil 1 on sale at Schucks for $29.99 a case of 6 and stocked up last month.

Mobil has been making syn diesel oils since the 70s; the first Rotella Syn showed up in 2002. Many are happy with UOAs from both (if you are one of those who think ppm of Fe is most important). GM chooses Delvac 1 ESP/M1TDT to offer to their dealer network. Mobil uses higher performance (and more expensive) base oil vs Shell's cheaper, yet quality "synthetic" base oil.

Mobil 1 TDT not CJ-4 Rated.

I just changed the oil in my 08 D-Max last night for the first time. I was just about to pour in the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck Synthetic oil when I checked for the CJ-4 rating and guess what? No CJ-4 rating. So off to the parts store for something better. Rotella Synthetic with CJ-4 proudly displayed on the front of their bottle! Guess what oil I'm running? The owners manual is very specific for the CJ-4 rated oil and even goes as far as saying problems with anything not CJ-4 rated will not be covered under their warranty. I'm surprised at Mobil 1. I thought they of all people would meet the CJ-4 requirement.

Skip both of them and run Schaeffer's 9000...full synthetic 5w-40. Great oil. Some here might even say Schaeffer's makes the best oil. And best of all it is pretty cheap. My last order was about 6 months ago so prices may have went up but I got it for around $16 gallon(less than that I think) but you do have to spend $300 to get free shipping. You can order directly from them.

They do, you just might have bought some lingering CI-4 Plus that had yet to be purged from the store. Read the label.

i run the rotella in mine

i also have 3 VW diesels that i run the rotella in..

one got 544k till blew a head gasket
one got 234k until broke a timing belt
the other got 312k until broke a timing belt

I use the mobile 1 in my gassers, and use mobile 1 filters on all of them....I use the rotella oil mostly because it is cheaper and just as good and much easier around here to find

Rotella synthetic is a fine engine oil, as with all of the other premium oils available these days. Either Mobil or Rotella will work great for our trucks according to the bearing and rod clearance specs, as well as the turbo and valvetrain lubrication requirements that our engines are built. If you're as concerned about the engine lubrication as it appears you are (as I am), I recommend investing in an oil analysis program to keep track of your oil performance and engine wear. Based on the miles I put on my truck and oil interval, I have a UOA done about once a year (around the 5K-6K mile mark on my oil)...I put around between 10K - 12K miles on my oil per year, and I've been changing my oil filter at 4K mile intervals (going with an 8K milee interval on an Amsoil EaO oil filter since it has a higher contaminant holding capacity than the filter I normally use).

Exactly. Mobil 1 has several newly CJ-4 rated oils. Read the bottle to avoid old stock.

I believe that what you are looking for is Mobil 1 DELVAC 5W-40. If you want a CJ oil, go with Mobil 1 Delvac ESP 5W-40. I've been running it year around. http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub..._ESP_5W-40.asp Here's a distributor locator (they can put you onto dealers or sell direct) http://www.host.exxonmobil.com/chann..._directory.jsp
