Not sure if I can say what would be the best gears for you but I have 5.13 in my truck and tow ruffly 20k. They work well for the towing but you can only do about 65 mph. At 65 I'm running about 2400 rpm. That is the only thing that I don't like about the 5.13's. If your gonna be using this for work and towing all the time and keep within a short range from you base location than I would say go with the 5.13's

5:13 is what I have,Its great for towing big loads in the 55-65 range.
I thought you could get a 4:30 gear, maybe Im wrong and its 4:78.At 75 your at 2800 rpm.Thats really buzzin the motor. But when a big grade comes in front of you and your loaded down heavy the 5:13 gear is great ratio for the climb up the mountain. When Im empty out on the road the 5:13 really sucks.Ive ran mine at 75/2800 for 1000 miles , just hopin Im not hurtin my truck, really kills you inside turnin those rpm's when you know the DMAX would pull you down the road easy at 2000 rpm.You have to think about how much towing to empty your gonna do.And what average speeds you want to achieve vs. RPM.If I was buying another I would consider taller gear.Im 5 spd and the new trucks are 6 spd trans. What RPM's are you 6 spd guys turnin with 5:13 gears. Please Post MPH/RPM w/6 spd.

I am pulling with 3500 and 3.73 gear. The truck just isnt enough. Really like the 4500 size and think i could still use it to drive some during the week. I have found two one with 4.30 and one with 4.78 gear. Drove the 4.30 gear truck and it was nice. havent towed with either. 70% time I am on fairly flat ground. I am considering the 4.30. Friend who had 550 with 4.88 said he would never do that again. He said it was too low for daily driving.

I also have 5.13 gears on my 5500 4x4, its the only available ratio on 4x4. But I have the 6 speed Allison. At 65 im pushing just under 2300 rpms. I think the 4.78 and a 6 speed would be a fine combo, or the 4.30 and a 5 speed. If the trucks are 07 model years im pretty positive they have the 6 speed.

I think the 4.30 gear truck is an 06. the 4.78 gear truck is definately a 07. I have been known to push the pedal so I would like to keep 70 at about 2000 or close to it.
