How many miles will it go?

Looking at a c5500 Roll back truck with a little under 200K miles on it. It is equipped with the CAT 3126 7.2L ENGINE and I was wondering how far it should run before major overhaul. It seems to run great and not smoke much. Never had much experience but I think I ca get this truck around $11K. Just checking to see what everyone thought. Oh yeah it has a manual transmission and Chevron 21ft Roll back bed.

All that it seems to need is front tires which I am thinking around $230 each for 245/70 19.5, and a seat which i just happen to have one that would fit. The body seems to be in good condition as does the bed.

Overhaul really comes down more to hours than it does mileage. I would say any where from 10,000 to 13,000 hours is what you could expect out of that particular engine.

Who put the CAT engine in it? Whats it have for a trans? Is it really a c5500 or a c6500? If it is a 5500 would you post some pics of the truck and engine compartment. Would be really interested in that conversion.

I have this engine in my 2002 7500 and it's been super to me so far. When I bought it new,I too was worried some, being a throw-away engine{no wet sleeves}.My local Cat dealer swears if you take good care of it,you will get 300K out of it.The most important thing is clean oil in this particular engine--the fuel pump is driven hydraulically by oil pressure.Cat oil changes are recommended by either miles, hours, diesel used in gallons, and time.Don't believe everything in the manual though until you check with Cat as mine was way off regarding the mile intervals. Also, let Cat adjust your valves as soon as you get it if it has'nt been done according to Cat's guidelines.Good luck.

It's probably an older C5500,say 2002 or older, that got the 3126 Cat as the standard diesel engine offered at the time.Pre-DM era.

Never thought about it in the older 5500. Oh here and I was hoping someone had come up with a way to put a CAT in a new 5500. Guess I'll have to keep dreaming.
