Tow ratings for 2005 Duramax 2500HD

Can anyone out there please provide the fifth wheel tow ratings, from the Owner's Manual, for the short and long box SWR 2005 2500 HD Duramax. Thanks in advance.

You should be more concerned with the tongue weight than the tow rating.

I'd be exceptionally happy if someone can also tell me the allowable tongue weight. I do not have a 2005 myself, I'm just trying to get enough information to help a friend who is considering buying a 2005 and doesn't have the towing info.

This more misleading information from TL. Most of their ratings are for an empty truck...how many of us tow with an empty truck?

The correct defintion of tow capacity is the GCWR minus the weight of the tow vehicle when ready to tow.

An earlier poster has a good point. The problem with 3/4 tons and 5th wheels is their lack of ability to carry the pin weight and remain within specs. Check the Tire and Information Loading sticker on the left rear door pillar...it will list the cargo capacity for that vehicle.

This is straight from the owners manual
'05 Crew cab, LB or SB ( 4x4 ) w/ 6.6 diesel - 12,000 lbs trailer weight, GCWR 22,000
Kingpin weight should be 15 - 25% of trailer weight up to 3,000 lbs.
( door jam sticker states, passenger + cargo not to excede 2535 lbs )

Pin weight is an issue, no doubt, even on the 3500 HD.

That trailer weight is for pull behinds, not 5th wheels. If you are running the truck at max weight (9200), tow capacity is 12800. If the truck weighs 8200, max tow weight is 13800.

See the formula above...GCWR minus truck weight.

GM's kingpin weight is causes more confusion. No 3/4 ton diesel can carry 3000 pin weight, but some folks read that statement and think that's what they can carry.

The 2535 cargo capacity is the total of everything that can be put in the truck...pin weight, passengers, cargo, tools, etc.

If you are running the truck at max weight, there would be nothing left for the pin or hitch.....much less worrying about how heavy the trailer would be. The pin weight is not included in the GCWR.......for example....fully loaded truck (people and cargo) of 8000 would allow you to tow a 14000 lb trailer as long as the pin weight remains within limits The pin weight IS included while figuring how much your truck can carry, but the pin does not add mass to the truck for the purpose of calculating GCWR. As several other posters point out, the pin weight becomes an issue long before the GCWR unless you have a very oddly designed 5th wheel. We tow a 12000 (loaded) 5th wheel with a 2500HD SLT Duramax....pin weight is just under the max...fortunatly we travel light with only my Wife and me and 2 small dogs. GM does create lots of of confusion with a wide array of numbers, weights, etc between the website, brochures and owners manual. I also think between GM and the 5th wheel makers, someone needs to get their act together....much of the "pulling power" of 2500 and 3500 SRW trucks is wasted due to the lack of pin weight capacity.
