I currently have the stock (3.73) gear ratio and I am looking at going with lower gears. Last weekend I pulled my new toy hauler and I think I could definatly use some lower gears. Fully loaded with fuel and water I was 27,500 pounds. I tow through the Sierras alot. Do you think going to 4.10 gears are enough or should I go lower?
they used to BUT the duramaxs had a vibration at highway speeds in 4 hi with the 4.10's so they went to the 3.73. i found this out first hand due to an issue with mine. the dealer can verify this as there is what is called a "campaign" on the issue.
It worked out great. With the gears and being able to run a stage one tune on my PPE tuner I smoked my buddy with the F-450 up the hill and it never felt like it was lugging.
Good to hear Zach. I am needing to gear my 6 speed dually and think about 4:56 with the 35's I am running. What tire size do you have now? Is it a 285?
We just picked up this 40 footer and combined weight is at 30k. I just dont want to be to low geared. I have 4:56 with 40s on my 5 speed Allison and its right back to stock.
I would do 4:56 with your set up. I'm running 235/85/16 Michelin tires. I love the gears so far but I have not been up to Sand Mountain yet with them only Pismo. I will get to take it up over the Sierras to Sand Mountain for Easter, I'm sure it will do great. Here is a pic of my set up.

Did your MPG towing and not towing get better or worse? I think I am going with 4:56's I already have front diff with 4:56 sitting here so I will just have to do the rear.
I dont really have a fair comparison. I will be able to tell on our Easter trip. But I think it has gone up.
