Rear axle pumpkin leaking

2004 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Duramax ... under 80k miles & just started noticing rear diff pumpkin is leaking.

What's the fix? Simply unbolt cover, R&R the with new gasket, then re-fill?

Anything unusual to be aware of?

Good point about the pics ... here's a couple. Oil appears dark around entire housing cover and virtually none at input shaft. If replacing this housing seal is as straightforward as it seems, figured I'd start there...

Truck is parked under cover for long periods of time, possible this seal dries out and then starts to fail when put back into service after a long lull in use?

Had to replace my pinion seal (along with transfer case) a while back as well, but that was due to a severely bent driveshaft ... another story

Haven't drained/refilled since replacing the break-in oil at 6000k miles ...

If I remember right, process for re-filling is simply add oil with truck on a level surface until it reaches the fill hole on the housing correct?

Can't remember exact specs but cold fluid should be about 1/2 inch below bottom of fill hole because of some axle seals leaking at least on earlier models.

That sounds right...recall reading something about sticking a finger in the fill hole to check when fluid level is ~1/2" under it.

Found the cover seal at JC Whitney - planning to swap out as soon as it arrives & see if that seals everything up.

Replaced housing gasket, but leak was evident again a couple days later.

Looks like it might be leaking from the input and both output shafts - mostly on the right side output shaft (oil is apparently "spraying" to the point it drips off the lower mount of right shock).

R&R of these seals a user repair or better left to a shop/dealer?

DID you use some black rtv gasket maker with the gasket and put the diff cover back on the rear and let it dry for several hours and then refill the rear??
