Transfer case shifts on its own

I am trying to help a friend and local dealership out. He has a 2002 gasser Chevy and some times at start up the transfer case is automatically in 4WD. It is now to the point the electonic T/C will not shift into 4W/D. We have already replaced the switch. What can we check now. I know I have read here about a "position sensor" but can't find it now. No codes are being shown. Thanks

It sounds like the encoder motor. My wife's 97, 03, and 06 Tahoe all did the same thing, as did a friend's Tahoe and another friend's Suburban. Our 97 Diesel Tahoe actually shifted itself into 4-lo while my wife was driving at about 30mph. The 03 and 06 would be in 4-lo sometimes when she would start it. In all cases it was the encoder motor. The problem is GM can't keep the p.o.s. on the shelf and I know a month ago they were on back order. It's good to know that from at least 97 till at least 06 they haven't figured it out.

Not bad, and in the mean time if you get it in 2WD, unplug the encoder till you get the new part, that way you can drive it full time.

It will throw a Check Engine Light, but after you swap the motor, just clear the codes.

Just thinking out loud if they are back ordered
