2-Speed Axle?

Has anyone ever attempted to put a 2-speed axle in a pickup?

I dont know if this is what you're looking for but theres something called 'gear vendors' and it's like an extra over drive and i believe that it goes into the rear trans housing.
you'll have to look it up because they're not a supporting vendor so we're not linking to their site.

All 2- speed rear ends I have seen are probably too large to practically put in a pick up

iv heard that some of the late 30 or early 40 licolns had some sort of 2-speed but i wouldnt think it would be supstantial enough for a 1-ton

the pumpkin gets really big really quick. Without a lift you would loose major clearance.

I've always thought they should design a practical 2 speed axle for pickups. Have a 4:55 and then 3:42. Or some combo of "towing" and "empty" gearing.

Of course with 4wd you'd have to either A: have 2 speed front axle too or B: only allow 4wd when only in a specific gearing. Wouldn't be difficult to do with everything computer controlled.

That's would be great idea. The way diesel prices are going it may happen.

How about shortening the main driveshaft and throwing a 2 speed gear box in there. I've seen them somewhere, not sure what they are rated.

ahh there they are, 'dual range auxillary transmission' but I dont see a Dmax application, it's basically a 2 speed box between the tranny and the transfer case . . .

Try gearvendors, they seem to have an Allison application for just over 3 grand.
