Front end

Well I guess it's time for some front end work... my 2007 had some slop in the pitman and idler arm, so I ordered both parts and the saver kit. After working on it I discovered I couldn't get the arms off so I took it to the local shop to have them do it for me (mistake number 1). Within a week of them replacing the pitman and idler arms I developed a power steering leak (go figure) and the clunk in the steering got worse, much worse.. checked the hoses to make sure they were tight (leak source) but no luck, so I decided to take it to the dealership to have it looked over...

After 3 hours they call me and tell me I have a list of things wrong.
1) right front hub loose (just out of warranty, April)
2) steering box leaking
3) PS high pressure hose leaking
4) intermediate shaft needs replacement

grand total approx 2500.00... OUCH

Told them to button it up and I'd come get it..

So here I am... I have ordered the following from rockauto.com (great site if you need parts for your truck)

1) ACDelco steering gear box
2) ACDelco front hub assembly
3) both hoses for PS (4 and 7 according to diagram)
4) intermediate shaft

I've also order some power steering fluid from Amsoil..

So questions.
1) am I missing anything?
2) are their boots/rubber sleeves I should consider replacing as well?

I plan on flushing the power steering system while I'm at it..

Advice?

Thanks

Dave

boots and sleeves on what? How much were the delco hubs? Timkens are the ones i went with for $149 a piece. You should have bought 2. Things like that should be replaced in pairs

The left front HUB was replaced under warranty about a year ago... they told me the right was good at the time... the hub was 241.79 from rockauto.com

Is there any boots or sleeves on either end of the intermediate shaft?

The steering box seals are not to hard to replace. Ive heard sticking with the original box is better than buying a rebuilt unit. They probably tried to remove the pitman arm with a pickle fork, which is a major no no, and broke the clips retaining the pitman shaft.

tileman, how do you remove the pitman arm? I don't know but what you said makes me wonder when I take mine in to get it replace I want to tell the guy not to use a pickle fork , but he will probably say "how do you expect me to take it off?" I would like to give him a good answer.
Thanks

There is an actual pitman arm puller that should be used, the problem is they have to practically drop the box in order to get it on the arm correctly to pull it, thats when hoses get pulled on and leaks start...

All you have to do is loosen the steering box bolts and you will get enough movement to slip the puller on , I know because I did it. No need to remove the box or the bolts completely.
