![]() ![]() Top image is stock idler arm under 800 lbs of stress. Bottom image is my design, under 1,000 lbs of stress. The engineering firm has recommended that I increase the small end by 0.200" in diameter to get rid of the hint of yellow around the hole that mounts the arm to the idler pivot. This change has already been incorporated into production. The firm has also indicated that this change will increase the parts loading capabilities by 150 additional pounds before it starts to look like the above photo again. So, what we have, per the engineering firm, is a 25% increase in strength over stock, and a whopping 270% increase in stiffness. The stiffness increase will directly affect product life via fatigue. Add to this the fact that the bearings are capable of 1770 lbs of static pressure, and 1150 lbs of thrust pressure, and we indeed have, The Ultimate Idler Arm.
