Duramax rear differential oil capacity
I just changed the rear diff oil on my 2005 duramax and the book calls for a little over 3 quarts. However it took 4 quarts before the fluid was level with the check/fill plug? Is the capacity really only 3 quarts and did I over-fill? In every other rear-end you fill it until it comes out of the check hole.
thanks for any recommendations |

4 qts should be fine. I did the same in my LLY and the LBZ I own now.
There is plenty of room for the fluid to expand and a little more in there to distribute the heat around can't hurt.

GM usually underfills axles. Figure 1 pint times 1,000,000 trucks and there's a LOT of $$$ GM keeps in their pockets.

Actually, I believe the GM spec is 3.78 quarts (supposed to be about 1/2" below the fill hole). But 4 quarts pretty much brings it up to the bottom of the fill hole and is "close enough." Besides, what are you going to do with 0.22 quarts of leftover gear lube?
