GM would be insane to change every single part of the truck, i.e. transmission, driveshaft, diff(s), knuckles, fuses, relays, alternator, HVAC, brakes. They have long standing suppliers for those parts and contracts with built-in year-over-year price reductions. Of course, they changed the part numbers on all the identical parts . . . just to make life miserable in the stock room.

Its easy to pick up a couple pounds here and there, and it adds up fast. For example, the front seats in the current trucks weigh around 70 lbs a piece if I remember correctly. With some redesigning and substituting lighter materials, you could probably save 75 lbs there (combined between the two seats) alone. Make the spare tire wheel aluminum instead of steel. (or maybe even run-flat tires and delete the spare tire altogether?? Theres at least 80lbs of weight dropped) Magnesium control arms instead of forged steel. All aluminum engines instead of iron-block engines. Magnesium front axle housing. Just a couple places that would be easy weight savings that I could think of off the top of my head. 50lbs here, 10lbs there, etc. It adds up. ben

I saw both the new GMC and Chevy at an autoshow in the Quad Cities a couple weeks ago. In peson I thought the new Chevy actually looked better then the GMC. Both looked better inperson compared to the pics.

Part number thing made me a little suspicious but the guy repeated it several times. Sheet metal is thinner, but harder.
Only way they are going to get the mandated fuel mileage is to lighten the truck. Just telling you what I was told by the company guy. He was actual GM employee, not a dealer salesman.

x2. I like the idea and functionality of the step bumper a lot, but it kinda just looks awkward. Maybe it will look better in person.
