With a 50% stake in VM motori, GM probably won't release the 4.5 since VM has a 3.0 with decent numbers. Ford brought out the Eco-boost claiming ~22mpg. Dodge has the Pentastar with an 8 speed auto claiming 25mpg. Time for GM to bring out it's fuel sipper. Hopefully a Diesel.

Yeah I just read that too. I'm excited because it's about time someone did it, maybe GM will finally put theirs out once they see the demand for half-ton diesels, but I'm bummed out that we weren't the first

For those that haven't read the article, here it is. http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/...first/1917131/
30mpg truck anyone? I only hope that the reason GM isn't the first to release this is because they see a problem with the engine that Fiat(chrysler) does not. Maybe they are waiting on a baby allison to finish development and testing?

Why would they need a baby allison when they have the 6L80/6L90 and the 6L45/6L50.
Any of those would work fine in a light/medium duty truck. 3ltr sounds a little small though, a 4ltr would be much better (4.5 )

That article hit the nail on the head! I hope GM is planning something killer for the 4.5l behind the scenes. Just imagine those new Chevy Silverado's with a cool, powerful turbo diesel from the factory! If they can make them as quiet as the new Cummins engine's and get people to test drive them I'm sure they could sell plenty.

I agree that the need is not there for an Allison and that there are multiple other options that would be sufficient, but want and need are not the same thing. Autoguide has an article where they asked Ford, Toyota, and Chevy about a diesel half-ton. All three said no plans and Toyota and Chevy both said they thought cost of ownership would keep sales down. Really? How many people have a truck just because they want one, or have one because they think they might need one in the future but have no need for it now? Same thing goes with 4x4(that cost extra right?). Chevrolet also said the higher cost of fuel would also hurt. Around here diesel is 15% higher than regular unleaded. If my math is right, the current gas burning Ram is over 15% more fuel efficient than the current Chevrolet(basing this off of EPA ratings). The Grand Cherokee is expected to get(be rated at) 30mpg, why wouldn't that be possible for the Ram? That is almost 30% better than the Chevrolet. I know apples to oranges comparing a 1500 truck to an SUV, but they are both full size and the SUV might weight more than a comparable equipped 1500. If Chevrolet could bring out near 30mpg with a diesel half-ton it would be near a 30% increase in fuel efficiency. I know maintenance generally cost more in a diesel, especially the corrective maintenance, but just for routine maintenance how much more expensive could a V6 diesel really cost? How many people trade vehicles in before they roll 100k or 150k on the clock? Would there be much corrective maintenance pre 100k, or even 150K with a diesel? It's getting more and more expensive for tune-ups on the gas burners with the special tools needed just to change out spark plugs. Dodge is going to release this diesel half-ton and there will be people who are going to buy it or trade in what they have for it, just because they want a diesel but don't want to shell out for a three-quarter ton truck. Some half-tons on the roads now have a higher initial cost than the three-quarter tons anyway. Couple that with being less fuel efficient than a diesel and it makes me wonder why Chevy is really blaming cost of ownership.
