Injector Replacement Cost

I'm looking at buying a 04 3500 with an LB7. I'm curious as to how much $$$ it would cost to have a shop/dealer replace all the injectors if they go bad and are not covered under warranty. Thanks.

Not a personal experience, but I've heard stories of some places quoting $5,000+ for all 8 replaced. Good luck with a warranty, LB7's are getting up there in age now. I think the original GM warranty was 7 yrs/200,000 miles? Maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong there

from what I've read. doing it yourself is close to Deezel's quote its usually around the $3000 mark.

It cost me about $2800 CDN for me to do all 8 myself with all the pieces to make it complete, and I got the bosch reman injectors at the dealer for their cost as well. I think most dealers quote about 10 hours to do all eight times whatever you local shop rates are (around here is $100/hour to $130/hour). So to have mine replaced by the dealer would cost around $4000.

If you can find out if the truck has ever had them replaced would be a start, if they haven't been replaced and there is a significant amount of miles on the truck its probably just a matter of time until they go.

If there is blue smoke at idle when warm, a check engine light, or diesel in the engine oil, these are signs the injectors probably need to be replaced.

Other than the injectors the LB7's seem to be pretty reliable truck though.

You can save a lot of money by replacing the injectors yourself, but figure around 3-4K if you have them done at a shop.

Lincoln sells the injectors $1700, and figure another $200 in misc parts. If you do them yourself figure on a whole weekend spent doing not hard by time consuming tedious work. If you go to a dealer with there markup and higher labor rates plan on $4500-5000, and most repair shops(non dealers) are going to run in the $3500-4000 range as they will be buying injectors from a place like the dealer or NAPA(the dealer gets $350-385 a piece for them).

Thanks for all the replies. Has anyone noticed certain condition or years that are more problematic than others? Or possibly if additives/injector cleaners makes a difference and keeps them from going out? thanks again.

Nope. Hit and miss. I have added additives since the first set went out at 19,000 miles. Changed the fuel filter every 7-9000 miles and I am now going thru my fourth set, at a 120,000 miles. By the end of the month, I won't be dealing with lb7 injectors anymore. Transplanting an LLY in.

The LB7's (2001-2004.5) were definitely the worst for injector problems. Running fuel from a good supplier seems to help, as well as running quality fuel filters and changing them regularly. Some people put a fuel filter adapter such as a nicktane adapter and run cat filters and/or add a lift pump with added fuel capacity such as a FASS or Airdog. Myself I run an ACDelco filter in the stock location with a FASS Titanium.

As for additives many say to stay away from products that contain alcohol as they emulsify the water and allow it to be run through the fuel system, where other additives demulsify the water which makes it form droplets and allows the water seperator to remove the water.

Additives that add lubrication to the fuel also help as it keeps the CP3 pump and injectors lubricated, as the LB7's were built to run Low Sulphur Diesel where today all we can get is Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel which has some of the lubrication incidently stripped away as part of the sulpur removal process, and an additive can help to add it back.

But here is some reading additves that may help in selecting the one right for your needs.

Hope this helps.
