Sounds like it maybe injectors. I would get balance and return rates checked.

It might help with more information. While it could be injectors it could also be a lot of other things that are less of an issue. Give us some info on the truck, mileage, accessories, past history.
And starting fluid is not a good thing to use with diesels.

Please do not use ether unless an emergency and you can risk the engine damage. Next time it does it, unplug the Engine's Coolant Temperature Sensor, located on top of the thermostat housing and try to restart it. The sensors can go bad, giving a false reading to the ECM , preventing a start.
Also the SLIGHTEST air leak can cause a no start condition. I have a thread where I diagnosed and fixed a hard hot start issue. Mine turned out to be 6 problems causing it.

I had the same exact issue.
I had good pressure when running, I wasnt losing prime everything was good. I had two injectors sending way too much fuel back through the return line which was causing the rail pressure while cranking to be very low. I replaced all the injectors, primed it up and it fired right up. |

Here is a link to my thread, I compiled a good list of things to check and how to check some of them too. Yes mine is an LB7, but they are basically the same.
Hard start sometimes
