Excessive Exhaust Smoke

I have a 2002 Duramax diesel pickup with 160,000 miles. I have changed the oil and filter very religiously every 4,000 - 5,000 miles. Other than having the dealer change the water pump at about 140,000 miles, I have had absolutely zero issues with the truck. If I ever wear this one out I will buy another.

I would like to get advice on what might be causing my exhaust to become visibly darker. The performance, both fuel economy and power, have not really changed over the last month or so that I've noticed the heavier than normal exhaust smoke. Since I am getting right at 2.5 gallons out of the engine each time I change the oil, I assume it is diesel smoke, not oil smoke. Has anyone encountered this problem? I'm trying to educate myself on what I'm getting into before I take it to the dealer and have them check it out. Any help from folks with experience in this area would be appreciated.

Is it a darker white smoke or a darker black smoke? Will help out with your answer.

Fill out a sig so we know if your running a programmer and/or upgrades you've done. Or if your sitting stock.

I should have given that information to begin with...

the engine is completely stock. The only thing I have done is gone to slightly larger tires. The smoke is dark gray or black - certainly not white in color.

Are you sure its not a blue tint to it?

Have you ever had the injectors replaced?

Start with the easy simple things first. Check or replace your air filter, clean MAF, check the intercooler tube for the famous rub hole, intercooler clamps for tightness and also the line going to the wastegate for cracks. Black smoke out of a diesel usualy means it's getting to much fuel for the amount of air it's getting. Hope this helps.

The filter has about 8 months of use on it - I normally replace it annually. I'll check it out though to make sure it isn't clogged or dirty. I am not familar with the MAF - what is that?

Haven't heard of any issues with a rub hole in the intercooler. Where on the intercooler would this rub hole show up?

I appreciate the help. I figure that someone with this engine has probably ran across this problem before.
