LB7 Fuel pressure problems
Guys,
I am looking for some advice to properly diagnose what appears to be a low fuel pressure problem. My 01 D-max has had an idle surge for at least 18 months. Fuel filter changes and fuel additives have not had any positive effects to cure the surge. Initially it was just an occasional sudden surge at idle. Now the surge is almost continuous and I recently got a check engine light which turned out to be a 0089 "pressure regulator" code. The pressure regulator is $450.00 at the dealer and I do not mind changing it, but I want to make sure there are no other possible causes that might cause low fuel pressure before replacing the regulator. I changed the fuel filter again with no results. I have checked all the lines for signs of sucking air into the fuel. The problem persists even with a full tank. The truck runs fine other than the idle surge but it is a bit down on power at full throttle. I am using the PPE Excellerator tuner on the 3rd level power setting. What field tests can I run to check the Fuel Control Actuator and Fuel Pressure Solenoid? I assume the Fuel Pressure Solenoid is the actual fuel pressure regulator? I live in the Katy TX area so temperature is not an issue as far as fuel jelling or anything like that. I dont want to change parts blindly, rather I feel there is a test for everything. Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance for your help. |

2001's were known for a idle lope due to the Fuel Rail Pressure Regulator.
It is most likely the problem. Changing it is a time consuming job. Good Luck.

As stated above. Common for LB7's. Do a search for FPRV, tons of info and pics.

Ive had the same problem. Only p1093 and p1094 codes (low rail pressure at idle and on accel). Had the injectors checked. people on here say FPR, another dealer said injector pump. So I dont know what to do. My brother recently got a brand new FPR for free so im going to throw it on.

the rail pressure codes usually lead to other problems. The original poster had a p0089 code.

easiest way is to get a dealer or someone with a tech II to do a graph of the fuel pressure regulator

Well, the 2-cycle oil trick seems to have cured the problem. Within 30 miles of driving time the "Check Engine Light" and idle surges have completely disappeared. I am still in a state of shock that this actually works, but it definately did work on my truck. Evidently the PRV needs some lubrication not available in Diesel fuel oil. I very much appreciate everyones input to help out.
