At what point do I need a boost gauge?????
I am doing an egr delete and up and down pipes this weekend and a pipe that deletes the egr. I am going to install a EGT sensor and gauge but at what point do I need a boost gauge. I am running the PPE standard and I have 4 or 5 maybe 6 levels of tune. Everytime i put it on level 3 it said I needed a egt sensor. At what point in HP do I need a boost gauge and sensor? This is only a daily driver that I love tinkering with not a race truck.

Kreep,
I had the same question and from everything I gathered it's "advised" that you run a EGT/ boost gauge after doing performance modifications to your engine as well as running a tune. I run my PPE at level 2 and have put in both gauges...

Damn I was hoping you would say that i only needed the egt gauge, that stuff is expensive as hell. Have you ever used tune 3 or 4? what is the danger zone for egt's and boost? I was also curious on level 2 which is the same tune I run now, are your egt's staying in a safe zone? Boost as well?

I have the boost, trans temp, and egt gauges on the a post. The boost guage is very handy to look at when climbing hills and pulling a trailer. I think the most important guage is the egt , temps get close to the red and i start to pull back on the throttle.

Kreep,
It is expensive but much less than replacing a D-MAX!!!! lol!! I have never ran the tuner above level 2. From everything I have read it is not advised to run at higher levels unless you have rebuilt/replaced and upgraded certain parts of the engine that I have not gotten too yet. As far as EGT from what I have gathered as long as your not running above 1350-1400 for prolonged times (might happen while towing) we should be good. As far as boost, I have not yet pulled my toy hauler with the gauge on and the highest boost level I have seen while driving on the road has been 23... from what I have read we are good to low 30's with mostly stock engine/Trans. I REALLY want to know what level's 3-5 feel like in the D-max but I am not willing to risk it right now!! hahahaaaaaaaaazzzzzaaaaa

Even on a stock truck the boost gauge is a good first-line check of what is happening. No power? Check the boost first.

I would be more concerned about stock transmission issues on levels 3 and 4, as level 3 ate mine. Of course a light foot remedies that but that's playing with fire.

Monitoring the EGT and the Boost pressure, you can diagnose problems much better. For example, is you have a hole in the boost tube, or loose boot, the pressure will be lower, and you may have a performance problem.
