Black Smoke from Exhaust-HELP Please!

This is my 2nd D-max in 4 years, i had a 2003 and now have a 2005 Crew 4x4. In my previous truck i installed a bully dog tripple dog and ran it on the performance setting for everyday driving and tow/haul when towing. I only noticed black smoke out of my my exhaust once or twice in 2 years with the programmer on. I recently installed the bully dog tripple dog on my 05 and on the performace setting i notice A LOT of black smoke out the exhaust everytime when i really step on the gas hard as well at every shift there is a little bit of smoke too. If i back it off one setting on the programmer there is less smoke and if i run it back on stock there is very little or none. I changed ALL fluids when i bought the truck as i wasn't sure what kind of service the previous customer had done. Could this be a case of my changing the kind of oil that had previously been used? OR is there a problem? fyi the truck has 60,000 miles currently.

The smoke is normal with the bully dog. That is why I like EFI live. I make more power and I have not smoke. I do not like smoke.

Welcome to the site. Please take a minute and fill out your sig. I agree with dmaxn04 - sounds like a case of HP. Different tuners have different characteristics when it comes to smoke, and black smoke is a sign of unburned fuel. All diesels will generate some, some will generate a lot. It does not sound like a mechanical problem nor a problem with your fluids.

Thanks for the welcome. can you tell me what/where my "sig" is? i hear lot's about a finger stick and egr plate...can the smoke be a result of not having either of these or would they make a difference?

CT Smoke Member

The egr blocker plate will eliminate some smoke but the bulk of it is comming from your programmer.A performance air intake will give you more air to even it out a bit. Your sig is a desricption of your truck and what mods it has, it comes up everytime you post so other members know what your running if your having problems.Go into your user cp and set it up.

X2 on the EGR blocker helping a bit with the smoke. Also as mentioned above you have a case of HP. You crank up the fuel being put into the engine your going to make some smoke with your foot into it! Your smoke probably clears up once your boost catches up with it too.

One thing that helps a lot is making sure your air filter is clean. If its dirty your not only making smoke, but wasting fuel.

Good Luck
