that is the effects of a major overheat done sometime before i got the car. glad i found the smoke problem to be ring related, as the piston was doomed to come apart with in 5k. major heats can lead to alot more problems then just head warps and bad pistons. in this case the heat was so bad that the rings lost there spring.

That is true. When an engine overheats badly, piston rings will lose their tension.I've seen it happen many times.

Nothing has really changed. They have not got any more common, just older. The 5.7's were way more common and some parts are getting hard to find. They are still out there but its no longer a guarantee that you can find a part when you need one. A few years ago you could spend a some time online and find just about an NOS part you could need for these engines and I think some stuff was still made. I think that has all changed. A lot of folks cleaned off their shelves of old inventory years ago when ebay was a good deal. With their changes the last few years they have screwed the sellers so its just not worth the hassle and expense anymore so a lot of the smaller seemingly less valuable parts are getting scrapped. Im to the point now with mine that I am keeping all parts I take off just in case some day those are the best I can find.

Parts are really tough to find and even more so for the 4.3 V6 diesel. The V6 held up better in regard to head gaskets. But injectors are VERY difficult to locate and almost impossible to find. They pop up on ebay every now and then, but its rare to see.

Engine bearings, gaskets, piston rings and so forth are no problem. But the pistons themselves are no longer made. The only chance of obtaining new pistons is if they are custom made.

I just looked at a real nice FWD 85 Caddy that has engine issues. Im usually up for something different but just had to pass because of parts being so scarce for those. I think the 85's are even worse because they had many new features that turned out to be one year only since they abandoned the program after that.

Exactly. The injection pump on 1985 5.7 diesels were different than previous years. They had the same mounting flange as 4.3 V6 diesels did. They were held with two nuts instead of three like in previous years.

The Caddy I looked at was a transverse V6. I think that was a rare car even in 85.
