White smoke at any time other than when you are using higher sulfur fuel, as in Mexico, is a reason to take the truck to the dealer for service.

If the white smoke appears under hard acceleration, in a 2011 model year, it is possible that you have a faulty injector in the downpipe. It is my understanding that there were a very small number of faulty injectors putting too much fuel into the exhaust early in the 2011 model year.

White 'smoke' when cold is probably just water vapour.

I'm having a similar issue checked out today. About 10 minutes after a cold start, cruising about 50 mph, then accelerating to merge, noticed a large cloud of white smoke from tail pipe. Let off and tried again, and again, and then it quit and went away.

DenaliHD, don't forget to mention to the dealer that the technician should check for bulletins about a possibly faulty 9th injector causing white smoke during injection into the exhaust.

Hey there DenaliHD,

I understand that you are experiencing an issue with your vehicle. I would be more than happy to look into this concern for you. Could you private message me referencing this thread including your contact information, VIN, current mileage, and preferred dealership?

I remember one day a few winters ago driving all day in negative temps I had a 4" ball of ice hanging from the exhaust at the beginning of the musket.

How does one know when you have a regen cycle?
Not always watching the exhaust so can't really tell. I've been having several recent cases where blue or black clouds come out during acceleration. Have 21,000 on the truck now and the first 20,000 I could put my hand in the exhaust and it would come out clean, not now. Looks like my 02 did black. Something isn't right. The regen can't be working correctly. Truck runs fine just smokes sometimes during acceleration. Confused.

jren, what model year is your truck? On the 2011 and subsequent years it is possible to detect a regen cycle by the sound of the exhaust during idle. It sounds very throaty, like a powerful outboard exhaust burbling under water, probably due to the fuel being injected into the exhaust by the 9th injector. Regen can then be confirmed by a dramatically reduced instantaneous mpg on the Driver Information Center. On 2007 through 2010 it is more complicated to detect a regen.

If your truck is still under warranty, take it in to your dealer, but also read this entire thread so that you know what MIGHT be causing the smoke you are seeing.

I have a 2012 chevy 2500 HD Duramx. I'm taking it in Tuesday. Can't understand why for 20,000 miles the exhaust would be so clean then the last 1000 or so it goes to black with puffs of dark or blue smoke. This should indicate something is wrong. Let them check for codes and hope it shows something.

Thanks for the response.
