1997 6.5L Fuel filter replacement

Hello All,
I just replaced the fuel filter as per the owners manual. So I released the fuel cap, and removed the old filter. I then cleaned out the filter bowl, and inserted the new filter. I cranked the truck with the bleed valve open and the fuel cap off. I can not get the truck to push fuel through the filter to the air bleed valve. I have cranked and cranked. What am I doing wrong?
I still have the bleeder valve open and the fuel cap off.
What am I missing.

Your lift pump should just run when you turn the key to 'on' - you shouldn't need to crank....

Is your LP working? Doesn't sound like it is...

ChrisK1500,
I turned the key on and all I hear is the golw plug relay clicking on and off.

Where is the lift pump located on this truck, 1997 K2500 L65?
Thanks Todd

Some years, the lift pump only works while cranking...can't remember which years run when key on/which years it only runs while cranking. The LP is located on the frame...just below the drivers seat...maybe a little further back. Try running a hot wire to one side of the LP, and see if it starts pumping. If it does, most likely your problem is the Oil Pressure Switch...if not, check for voltage...both with key on, and while cranking.

Hello again,
should I have the fuel cap on? What about the bleeder on top of the fuel filter, open or closed?
Thanks Todd

Is your LP running with the key on? If not you should fix that problem first....

Ok,
I checked the LP and it appears to be working. If I crank the truck for a couple of seconds I can hear the lift pump pumping at the end of the cranking cycle. When the truck is cranking I can see the oil pressure gauge reading bout 30 psi.
What now?
Thanks Todd

Thanks Guys for your posts,
Thanks for your patience as well. I had the fuel cap on an off and on and off. I don't know what was the problem but she eventually pulled fuel to the filter and fired off and is running. I think it would not pull fuel with the cap off, seems funny knowing diesels caps are vented. I am not sure.

Thanks Todd in wa

maybe in future it'd be a good idea to refill the bowl with fuel after changing out the filter. especially if the bowl gets a cleaning. i'm no expert but don't think its a good idea to spin the ip without getting some fuel to at least lube it.
