6.5 turbo diesel hard to start

I have a 93 chevrolet 6.5 turbo diesel and am having problems with starting. In the mornings the truck starts right up, but when the truck is warm, I have to crank it until the battery is just about dead before it will start. Any ideas? Please help!!!

Ha, you need a new injector pump. Check my thread here...

http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=91031

Mine is the same year. Just ordered my pump from SS Diesel Supply. I emailed the owner about my problem and here is his response..

My question:

My symptoms
> are that the temps down here have been in the mid 100's and the truck
> will start right up in the morning every time. Trouble starts after
> that when it is warm up. The engine will crank forever and sometime
> will finally turn over and other times won't at all. If I pour luke
> warm water over the IP it starts every time. Since my IP is
> mechanical I hope the one I ordered from you will fix my hot start
> problem. Have you heard of this before?

His response:

Yes, exactly the injection pump! The 93's had a problem of pump head warpage
when hot. They were impossibe to start when hot. Cooled back down it would
start no problem. Our pumps have brand new design heads that will never warp.
You made the right decision.

I will post a follow up after it gets changed out.

Its sits low in the engine underneath the turbo cover and right in front of the fan. I suggest you surf through the faq's page as there is a wealth of info for noobies!

I had the exact same problem and had a new pump put on (after some arguements withe shop) the truck now has 1200 miles on the new pump and no problems at all since they tuned it. i had them turn down the pump as an expirement for mpg's and gained 2 -21/2 mpg's so far. I do have a small loss of power but the mpg's look better right now and i can always crank it back up when i need to.

will the injection pump make the motor knock. I have a knock in the motor ever since I had the fuel problem. Also, if you do not bleed the fuel filter correctly, will it make it hard to crank?

Looks like we are having a rash of DB2-4911 failures all at once. On next hard start hot, try pouring a little room temperature water over the IP to see if it will start then. Helps to confirm actual pump problem, before making a spendy investment.

I suspect the triple digit heat in a lot of places are taking it's toll on already worn out original injector pumps.
