The 1000 mile DoveBid Frito-Lay 4BT Testdrive...

I picked up my DoveBid Frito-Lay truck in GA this past weekend. It's an 82 Chevy Gruman with a Cummins 4BT that was installed in 95 during the Frito-Lay repower program. The motor has 53,832 miles on it since install and runs like a top. The truck made the 1000 mile trip back without a hitch. The governor acts like a cruse control with a top speed of 65 MPH with the petal mashed to the floor. The top speed would have been better with my 4L80E over the TH400 that’s in the truck now. It got 18 MPG during the trip back which I thought was impressive since the truck has no aerodynamic characteristics. Frito-Lay gave me all of the maintenance records since the repower. If your looking for a 4BT truck I say go to DoveBid, it was a breeze. Here are a few pics.

Injection pump is a little like a swiss watch. Don't like water and no telling when it's time is up. Use lots of lubricant additives for long pump life

I am curious about the 4BT. What kind of HP and Torque are these things capable of? Looks like a good buy, nice looking van.

Mitch, I got the truck for $1202.00 from the last DoveBid auction. It was a steal... This 4BT has the internal balance option and is tagged for 105 HP @ 2200 RPM. It also has the GM Hydroboost brakes and GM P/S pump. The truck gets up and goes pretty well as is and has tons of torque from idle to about 50 MPH. After that the IP pump starts to de-fuel, you can feel it like taking your foot off the pedal. The fleet mechanic I talked too said it was easy to make them blow black smoke and spin the tires from a dead stop. I asked him about my plans to put it into my GMC Dually and he told me his friend had done this in a C2500 and is getting 26MPG and its great to drive. He also said the 4BT's repowers from Cummins installed after 93 have the internal balance option and is the only way to go, the others he said would rattle your teeth out. This truck weighs more than my dually and has a GVWR of 16,000. I think the 4BT would work well in my GMC with the extra gear in the 4L80E and locking converter and get much better MPG with gearing, better aerodynamics and weight reduction. I was suprised to get 18MPG with it floored all the way home.
