A few questions about the 6.5

Hi all, I have a few questions about my 2000 1 ton Chevy. On the back of the engine on top of the intake manifold (where a distributor would be on an older model gas truck), there lives a part that is a mystery to me. Can someone help I.D?

Also, there seems to be a lot of blow-by oil buildup around the turbocharger. Is this acceptable?

Thanks for looking.

The part with IMPORTANT marked on it is the fuel filter. The black plastic ring around it is a retaining nut that must be removed to change the filter.

The slime on the turbo does look excessive-the CDR may be at fault?
CDR\PCV - what’s it all about, Alfalfa?

Take some time to look over the FAQ:

I have noticed that the breather tube (from the passenger side valve cover to the turbocharger intake boot) seems to be the cause. The elbow has diesel oil in it and the compressor fins had oil on them. The blow-by oil is being compressed into the intake where it seems to be seeping out of the rubber coupling between the turbo and the intake.

On the pic of the fuel filter, looks like your missing a upper intake bolt, along with some build up. Probably a bad boost leak. I would tear it all apart, get a new plenum gasket, and replace that bolt. Get a new CDR too. I would check to see what kind of shaft play the turbo has, it may be done for.

Thanks gentlemen. I will order a new CDR along with an intake manifold plenum gasket. Are all the bolts the same lenght in the intake? If so, I will remove one and bring it with me to the hardware store to match the correct lenght and thread pitch.

Only the center plenum bolts go through to the boosted area, but if the seal is not good from lack of clamping force or a blown out gasket boost loss would definitely happen from that area as well.
