Any way to kill turbo?
So, my stock gm turbo is SHOT. Tons of shaft play, puddle of oil infront of the compressor, and grey exhaust smoke. Definitely oil smoke.. and there are no other reasons for it to be smoking, considering there is absolutely no blow by (~450 miles on the engine). I really dont want to have that crap circulating through my new motor. I'd rather run it around 'N/A' for a few weeks until i can afford a new turbo. Any ideas? Leave the turbo and gut it, block the oil feed?

Unless you turn down your IP somehow to make the engine play nice with the lack of boost you're going to leave a cloud of black smoke behind that would make a Cummins owner jealous you every time you touch the accelerator. That will crank your EGT's through the roof which carries other issues with it.
I'd just park the truck until you can afford the replacement, personally.

try a junkyard lots of 6.5s around with turbos almost guaranteed to be in better shape than what you have and if you talk nice you could probably get one cheap as long as you take it off yourself

I think you'd be surprised at how a 6.5 designed and tuned for a turbo behaves without one.

Alright. I just figured that i would be better off than building nasty buildup with oil running through the intake. A member listed a known good GM turbo in the classifieds, i just PMed him. Seems like a solid deal. Ill pick it up on monday if he responds.

I had the unfortunate problem of an intake connector blowing off while towing my 32' camper on the highway going to florida one time.
I drove that way for over 30 miles and the smoke was pretty heavy, considering what I was towing though to be expected. The thing is even though the Egts went up to 1/1,200* steady the coolant temp never got elevated over 210/215*. I watched the gauges more than the road, trust me I was afraid of blowing the new at the time GEP and although it lost alot of power on the hills and I worked the shit out of it, it stayed cool even though the EGTS would touch 13/1,400* on the hills and the coolant temps still didn't get elevated above215* I'm just sharing my experiance with you and letting you know that if you have to drive your truck you should be fine as long as you keep an eye on your gauges. I've driven personally without the turbo hooked up while testing other things and have had no issues, just keep an eye on the temps and you will be fine. I wouldn't recommend sustaining temps over 11/1,200 for very long but that will only happen if you have your foot in it.

Cool, thanks for the input. Fortunately, i worked a deal with a user from DP for a low mileage good condition GM5. I will swap it on there, and run it for a few months until i can afford to do an HX40 swap. I should have it some time this week.
