Remote Start ect System Opinions???
Well, I got a gift card to go to a local car audio shop to get a remotre start, alarm ect type of system. It includes instillation so no worries about lack of directions ect.
What I want to know are some opinions on good systems you all use, especially with diesels??

The previous owner of this truck had just installed a viper 5704. It has more features than I have figured out how to use. Seems to function well as far as alarm systems go. He did not connect the remote start feature. I think it may have something to do with it being an OBD1 vehicle. From what I read on their website, the alarm communicates with OBD2 computers to perform remote start, so it can probably handle waiting for the glow plug cycle. It can also read out cabin temps to the remote for cold weather starts.
It can be expanded to add bluetooth support so that a mobile phone can be used instead of a keypad for all the remote functions. One of the add on modules in this category also adds a GPS function to allow you to track the vehicle. Not sure what kind of range that has. I also noticed mine has a switch under the hood connected to the alarm. The remote will inform you of any sensor that is activated via remote if you are within a 1-mile range. Pretty crazy.

I've got an AutoPage on our gasser, works good. If your truck is a manual tranny they may not install a remote starter on it for liability issues. The shop I used to work in wouldn't anyway.... I think most of them have some type of wait to start for diesels.

OBDII has been mandatory in all vehicles since 1996 so your truck does not run anything OBDI. N/M sorry I looked and saw your 03, didn't realize you probably meant your 1994. My 04.5 had a viper, on it, don't remember which model, but it worked perfectly, watched the glow plug data then fired the truck, functioned just like the factory remote start. It would kick on the climate control and seat heaters etc. The viper smart start systems are pretty awesome if you have an iphone or android... start it from the phone using a cellular signal, you can see if the truck started, lock/unlock the doors, fuel levels among other things... If I didn't already have a factory remote start I'd have that in a heart beat. only negatives I've seen about it is if you park in an underground parking deck or an area where the truck does not have a cell signal its useless.

Most of the remote start kits I see are advertised for automatics only. As you said, no one can be 100% sure the vehicle is in neutral- so no one will design a system that will work with one. And most manuals have that clutch safety (have to be pushed to start). If someone mods an auto only for a manual (and bypasses the clutch switch), thye are on their own.....I hate to say this, but hope one never leave it in gear and try to start it...if it takes off, I can see the lawyers rubbing their grubby little hands together..

I'm still debating if I want to get one for any of my diesels.

DEI products are by far the most widely used...

Unless there is one that verifies oil pressure on start up I am out. I've also seen a few vehicle fires caused by the wiring. Make sure it is installed correctly.

my 95 has a system in it,, LOVE IT!! it's DesignTech,,, but they were bought out several years ago, and when I called the number they couldn't really help me. Put 2 new batteries in the fob's, and looked under the dash to find a wire unplugged from the module. Plugged it in, and Viola! Remote start, + alarm, <-- I live in small town, and don't use the alarm, but I can start my burban, parked in the pole barn, while I'm sitting in my computer chair, inside the house.
