My flat bed got spooked today!

For all you folk with horses, you know what a horse does when it get gets spooked ! IT HAULS ASS !

And that is exactly what my truck did today! It was a normal day and all was well, the old truck has been doing really good since the reformation. PMD relocate, Fuel Filter raised up, seals and so on.
I had started the truck today to let it warm up, and company pulled up.

My son was right beside my truck working on his 6.5 Burb. So I went and talked to my company while the truck set and Idled. After I came out and my company left, I noticed the truck was shut off and my son was white as a ghost! He said that all of a sudden the old 6.5 idled up a little and came back down, it did it a second time and came back down, THEN! she revved and hit the governor !!! He imediatly shut it off! It had been shut off for 30 min. so I started it right up and we drove for 40 miles and she purred like a kitten.

Evidently, my truck got SPOOKED ! Any Ideas?
1997 6.5TD with 370k but drives and feels like 50k.

If you have checked everything over as best you can, I would buy a new PMD just in case

Ive had that happen also, turns out it was the PMD.

Crank shaft position sensor. Look It up. Since you have a new pmd I'd rule it out. My truck did the same thing idled really rough for 30 second an decided to free rev itself at the lumber yard while I was loading roofing shingles and stuff. If that sensor is bad and when I fails the truck WILL NOT RUN for long periods of time. Had mine replaced and been fine ever since *knock on wood*

Thanks Guys ! Sorry for the delay in my response as I got the flu right after this post, I am slowly regaining my strength as this is a "Bad One"!

I will get a New PMD as I only remoted the old one to the front bumper.
I have a Black PMD on the truck. I have a gray spare PMD but it will not plug into the the end of the cable extension.

Is it possible to use a gray PMD in place of the black one?

The short extension harness is one way to go, but also in a pinch, there is a way to "neuter" the connector. There is a thread floating around where someone showed now to trim the connector to fit w/ either the black or grey. Same with the resistor "chips". (Wait, one of links above shows the trimming....)

I ordered the short adapter harness, just because.

Most of the threads I have been reading says when the engine rpm "races" or varies on it's own, it's usually the PMD. And most of the time, from the reading, people have stated that it was a D-Tech black PMD. The CPS (crankshaft position sensor), I have no comment....in my readings, I have not come across it yet.
